Nepal flood disaster sparks questions over Trump cuts

Featured Replies

The devastating floods that tore through Nepal have killed at least 670 people and left around 3,000 missing, including dozens of Americans. Now a former US disaster-response chief has raised a troubling question: could lives have been saved if a flood-warning programme dismantled under Donald Trump had remained in place?

Warnings that could have made a difference

Jeremy Konyndyk, who previously led USAID’s disaster response, pointed to the SERVIR programme, a partnership involving USAID and NASA that supported flood prediction, disaster preparedness and monitoring of dangerous glacial lakes in Nepal.

Konyndyk said the programme had provided advanced forecasting with days of warning, giving communities crucial time to prepare for floods. He argued that DOGE-led cuts to US foreign aid had affected programmes designed specifically to track the kind of Himalayan hazards now facing Nepal.

The floods are believed to have followed a catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalayas, sending a surge of water and debris downstream.

Trump-era cuts under renewed scrutiny

Konyndyk said DOGE had targeted federal grants using searches for terms including “climate”, with programmes connected to flood prediction among those affected. A NASA notice published in March 2025 confirmed that USAID had terminated agreements with SERVIR partners, leaving NASA unable to continue the programme.

The wider cuts were extensive. Under the Trump administration, DOGE oversaw tens of billions of dollars in reductions to US foreign aid, with many USAID projects subsequently shut down or severely reduced.

There is no evidence that the Nepal disaster would have been prevented, or that the casualties would definitely have been lower had SERVIR continued. But the timing has intensified scrutiny over whether dismantling climate-monitoring and disaster-warning infrastructure left vulnerable communities with fewer tools to respond to an increasingly dangerous environment.

With thousands still missing and rescue operations continuing, the debate over the cost of those cuts is now moving from Washington’s balance sheets to the devastation left behind in the Himalayas.

Unsettling question raised over Trump admin's role in devastating Nepal floods

Considering the bias source, just a left wing anti Trump headliner IMHO

Probably an inevitable event, but even the ever Trump hating NYT didn't blame Trump 🤣

The inevibility, just a matter of time, pointed out here ...

I see you didn't answer the question, just try to shoot the messenger.

The question being:

whether dismantling climate-monitoring and disaster-warning infrastructure left vulnerable communities with fewer tools to respond to an increasingly dangerous environment.

I don't do 'what if' questions, as nobody can say for sure. But since the event was so sudden, most think it was unpredictable. I did edit my above post which touches on that.

If anybody is responsible, it's China whose dam building and blasting in the area likely amplified the instability of the already geologically unstable area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsyr6kKRuT4

The EU is rich. Why didn't they fund it? Shouldn't Von der Leyan take the blame, too?

Admittedly China has built more than 2000 dams in the region. The report said melting glacier

The real problem is global warming. Every government is trying to ignore it. Thermodynamics does not care what politicians do.

So explain to me why it's the job of US taxpayers (and politician who reckless deficit spend) to supply the world with regional weather monitoring systems? And even with a few billion in USAID money, could this have been realistically foreseen? My answer? No and No!

Why not? The US is quite happy to spend taxpayer money on 750 military bases around the world, when the probability of America being invaded is about the same odds as me winning TattsLotto.

Could it have been foreseen? Yes. Scientists have had hard data since the 1960's. Politicians and the general public are sticking their fingers in their ears.

Its official. Its TRUMPS fault that Chinese & Nepalis built villages in a hazardous and unstable valley! Priceless. They will be blaming Trump for the weather soon. Oh wait🤣

Staggering.....so just to be clear......no one is blaming Biden?
