Three people were killed and dozens injured after a long-haul passenger bus overturned and left National Highway 19 in Vietnam’s Central Highlands early on Monday.

The crash happened at approximately 4am on the highway bypass through Hoi Phu Ward in Gia Lai Province.

Local authorities said the Viet Tan Phat bus was travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Gia Lai and was carrying around 31 people when it suddenly overturned and crashed off the road.

Emergency teams sent to the scene

Rescue and emergency personnel were dispatched to assist passengers, transfer injured people to medical facilities and secure the crash site.

Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital said it admitted 20 victims from the accident for treatment on Monday morning. Three other people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities continued examining the vehicle and surrounding area while investigators worked to establish what caused the bus to overturn.

No official cause had been announced in the initial report. Details about the condition of individual passengers, the identities of those killed and whether other vehicles were involved were also not immediately released.

Crash occurred during overnight journey

The bus was nearing Gia Lai after an overnight long-distance journey from Ho Chi Minh City when the accident occurred.

National Highway 19 is a major route linking Gia Lai with Vietnam’s central coastal region. The bypass through Hoi Phu Ward carries long-distance passenger and commercial traffic around the urban area.

Photographs from the scene showed the passenger bus on its side beyond the roadway while taskforces inspected the area. Medical and rescue teams prioritised removing passengers and taking the injured for treatment.

The number of passengers reported on board and the hospital admission figure indicate that authorities were still accounting for victims and assessing injuries during the early response.

The investigation will need to determine the sequence of events, the condition of the bus and road, and any other factors that may have contributed to the crash.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

Foreign residents and travellers using long-haul buses should choose established operators, wear seatbelts where provided and keep travel documents and essential medication accessible. Overnight journeys can involve long periods on major highways, so travellers may wish to check operator safety records and route timings before booking. The Gia Lai crash remains under investigation, and no cause should be assumed until authorities publish their findings.
