Police in Chiang Mai are searching for the person who left a baby girl beside a road in Doi Saket, where she was found crying alone in roadside grass shortly before dawn on 1 September 2026.

The baby, believed to be about five days old, was taken to Doi Saket Hospital. Doctors found that she was generally healthy, although weak, and she remains under close care.

Baby found before dawn

At about 5am, Doi Saket police received a report from a member of the public that an infant had been abandoned beside a road in Ban Pho Thong Charoen, Moo 2, Choeng Doi subdistrict, Doi Saket district.

Pol Col Supachai Chantra, superintendent of Doi Saket Police Station, sent patrol officers to the location. On arrival, officers heard a baby crying from grass beside the road.

Using torches to search the area, police found the infant lying on the ground wrapped in a brown towel. The child was immediately taken to Doi Saket Hospital for a medical examination and treatment.

Hospital care and child protection

Hospital staff confirmed that the baby is female and approximately five days old. While her overall physical condition was described as sound, she was tired and required close monitoring.

Police have contacted the Office of Social Development and Human Security, known in Thai as PMHS, so the child can be placed under initial protection and care.

CCTV and hospital checks underway

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the location where the baby was found and along surrounding routes in an effort to identify whoever brought her there.

Police are also checking information with nearby hospitals for records connected to births during the past week, seeking evidence and leads linked to the person involved.

Col Supachai said officers would move quickly to trace the person who abandoned the child, bring them in for questioning and proceed under the legal process.

They abandon babies too in America in poverty-drug areas. That's what I would look at. Mental illness also a possibility.

This happens all over and I'll never understand why leaving the baby out in the elements, which leads to death many times, is an option instead of leaving the baby with a social worker. I understand if they're ashamed and not want their family to know, hiding the pregnancy for 9 months somehow, but abandoning can lead to manslaughter or murder. There are people all over who would love to have a baby but can't.

A person who does this is not in a normal mental or emotional state, so what we think in the context of our common sense really can't in all fairness be applied. I have mental health issues and I understand full well what that can do to a person in a desperate state of mind. In the US there are no questions asked drop off points at medical and emergency facilities for mothers who face this kind of crisis.

I agree with the fact they are in a bad way, but that child deserves a life. Dropping it off in any place besides with other people is a crime, and many times leads to deaths. I'm up on depression and what it can do to people, in my own family and good friends. There are no excuses for this. They carried that baby nine months so have that much time to plan what to do. Yes, Thailand does not have what the US does as far as drop off places but they do have this.................

Parents can contact local provincial social welfare offices to discuss temporary foster care or legal relinquishment for adoption.

However, entering these facilities requires formal intake procedures rather than anonymous drop-offs.

2. Crisis Helplines: Organizations like Childline Thailand operate the Sai Dek 1387 hotline. They provide emergency assistance, shelter, and guidance through administrative processes for vulnerable families and children in street situations.

A very cruel way to abandon a baby. At least leave the infant in a place where she will not suffer and be cared for.

Sad thing to do — very sad — but there is often also a sad story behind, when someone need to do such action.
