Indian tourist arrivals to Thailand fall 11.6%

Featured Replies

Indian tourist arrivals to Thailand fell 11.6% year-on-year between 1 and 22 August, making India the only one of the country's four main overseas markets to record a decline during the period.

The Bank of Thailand said the drop followed proposed revisions to visa-exemption rules affecting foreign visitors, including Indian nationals. The decline was nevertheless an improvement on the 20.2% contraction recorded in July.

Speaking at a briefing on July economic and monetary conditions on Monday 31 August 2026, Pranee Sutthasri, senior director of the central bank's macroeconomic department, said officials would continue monitoring arrivals from India.

Proposed visa rules changes approved in July

In July, the cabinet decided to halve the visa-free stay for tourists, removing many countries from the scheme while approving new privileges for other nationalities, including Indian tourists.

Under the new arrangement, the 30-day visa exemption applies to visitors from 60 countries and comes into effect on 15 September 2026. India was added to the amended list in July.

The changes matter to Indian travellers planning short breaks, family holidays or repeat visits to Thailand, as visa eligibility and permitted stay periods can directly affect travel arrangements.

India was Thailand's third-largest international source market in 2025, accounting for 7.5% of arrivals. China ranked first with 33.6%, followed by Europe at 12.4%, while the Middle East ranked fourth at 7.3%, according to the Bank of Thailand.

Other key markets improve

China arrivals rose 23.5% during 1-22 August, while visitors from Europe and the Middle East increased by 1.2% and 18.6% respectively.

Overall foreign arrivals declined 0.3% year-on-year, a marked improvement from the 2.5% fall recorded in July. After seasonal adjustment, foreign tourist arrivals rose from 2.1 million in June to 2.5 million in July, led by long-haul markets including Europe, the Middle East and China.

The improvement was supported by a gradual recovery in flight capacity following easing tensions in the Middle East, alongside stronger demand during school summer holidays in many countries. Recovery in short-haul arrivals, excluding China, remained gradual.

Tourism receipts increased by 2.7% in July after seasonal adjustment. However, spending per trip fell, reflecting a slightly shorter average length of stay as travel patterns normalised after the easing of the Middle East conflict, the regulator said.

Mrs Pranee said the pace of tourism recovery would partly depend on flight capacity, which remains constrained. Competition among regional tourism markets also remains intense and will affect Thailand's travel sector, she said.

Should we be happy or sad ?

It has nothing to do with the visa... That is a an excuse to hide that Thailand is getting too expensive, and have a non welcome attitude at the moment. It is many time stated that tourists don't stay for 60 days but normally a few weeks, so the 30 day visa would be enough for most tourists. Also the Indian weddings don't take 2 months.

If Thailand wants more tourists they can start to stop all the negative news about tourists. It has a negative influence on tourism. 99% of all tourists are normal behaving tourists, and only a few causes problems. Why only highlight these few??? The focus should be on the locals who scam, overcharge and attack tourists, as they are damaging the tourist industry too

True, there has been a lot of negativity of late. It has been Israelis, and I just read a thread complaining of Chinese up in CM.

How can the the visa changes have had an effect when they don't start until September 15th ? Plus by the govt/tourist authorities own admission the new regulations are adequate for the normal length of stay of Indian tourists . Strange take.

100% correct..I couldn't put it any better...though Thai "protectionists" will disagree.

This should result in less pollution.

just a bit of info...Walking Street isn't all of Thailand, it's not even all of Pattaya, when looking at tourist numbers you cannot use a small instance, or one person's opinion, who could be sensitised towards a particular racial group.

The Indians will be back after they have saved up enough money to replace all the missing gold chains from their last Thailand trip...

...Sounds Like A Possible 'Win-Win Situation'... (?)

No surprise, too many bad gold-chain experiences with kathoeys that went public...🫣

Sorry, but I can only say "Good" to this are they are like a plague, and will end up everywhere due to there just being so many of them... you are even seeing it now in random non-tourist places, they are everywhere. This will be a huge political problem soon and the Thais will freak out about it and the reaction will be the usual strong sweeping answer style stuff.

Pretty good news. I don't hate Indians as a whole but there's just too damn many of them in Pattaya so a bit of relief is good. Incidentally a dancer friend in Bangkok started working in a recently opened Indian club near soi 13 and she posted some videos from there - the place is completely empty - zero customers. Kind of makes sense since Pattaya is so much cheaper overall, or it could be a real decline in numbers.

Probably even less than 1 in a hundred. More like 99.99%. Are there really 330,000 foreign criminals a year? Aseannow only manages 3 or 4 foreign criminals a day so I make that less that 1500 in a year. I had to go to four decimal places to even get the answer 0.0045%
