A 39-year-old durian seller has been charged with murder after his 37-year-old wife was fatally stabbed at their stall near Nong Prue Kao market in Chonburi's Ban Bueng district.

The incident occurred at a durian stand beside Road 344, the Ban Bueng-Klaeng route, in Moo 1, Nong Phai Kaeo subdistrict. Police and rescue workers found the woman unconscious, severely injured and suffering heavy blood loss.

The victim, identified as Boonrat, had several serious knife wounds. A knife remained embedded in her right upper arm, while she also had deep wounds to her shoulder and right side.

Rescue personnel administered first aid and CPR before a Ban Bueng Hospital ambulance took over. She later died from her injuries.

Her husband, identified as Itsara, was detained by bystanders at the scene and handed to police.

Suspect cites argument over alleged allergy

According to police, Itsara admitted the attack and told investigators he had travelled with his wife to Chanthaburi to buy durians for resale.

He claimed they stopped to eat som tam during the journey, and that he had told his wife he could not eat raw pla ra because he had previously suffered an allergic reaction.

Itsara said he later found a piece of pla ra in the dish, developed a rash, swollen lips and breathing difficulties, and bought allergy medicine. He claimed his condition did not improve and asked his wife to take him to hospital.

However, he said she wanted to unload the durians and finish work first. He alleged she later made sarcastic remarks about his allergy, leading to an argument.

Police said he told them he became angry and hurt, then picked up a knife used for peeling durians and stabbed her several times.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Nattapong Jaikwang, the investigating officer at Ban Bueng Police Station, said Itsara had been charged with intentional murder. Investigators will gather evidence before taking him to Chonburi Provincial Court for detention, and police will oppose bail because of the seriousness of the case.

Family calls for full legal action

Boonrat's sister, Pimphaka, travelled from Buriram to arrange her sister's funeral and follow the case. She said she had never met Itsara and understood the couple had been together for about three months.

"Just because of not eating pla ra, or being allergic to pla ra, it should not have come to killing each other like this," she said, calling for him to apologise to the family and face the full legal process.

The victim's body will be returned to Buriram for religious rites.

A volunteer official, Alongkorn Phayakburapha, said Boonrat had previously contributed money to a coffin fund for poor families. The group will now use a coffin she helped fund for her own funeral and assist with returning her body home.
