Thai man held after Briton, 70, hurt on Jomtien Beach

Featured Replies

A 70-year-old British man was taken to hospital with facial injuries after a confrontation on Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, on Thursday afternoon, 3 September. Police have detained a Thai man, 28, while they investigate claims that the dispute concerned a missing motorcycle.

Rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation and patrol officers from Pattaya City Police Station were called to the beach near Jomtien Soi 10 at about 12.40pm.

The injured man, identified only as Mr Anton, a British national, had swelling to his face. He was given first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment.

CCTV shows confrontation escalating

Initial witness accounts and CCTV checks indicated that the Thai man approached Anton while the British man was sitting with friends on the beach. The two men spoke before a confrontation developed.

Preliminary footage appeared to show the Thai man kicking Anton in the face, knocking him to the ground. A fight involving punches then followed before members of the public intervened and alerted authorities.

While officers were dealing with the incident, the Thai man reportedly tried to leave the area and then ran away. Police pursued him and took him into custody.

Anton’s friend was said to be angry and shouted at the Thai man. Officers stepped in to prevent the situation escalating further.

Police checking motorcycle allegation

The Thai man told officers that he believed the British man could be connected to the disappearance of a motorcycle. He said he had some evidence and had gone to question him.

However, police said the account was not yet clear. Officers also noted that the man appeared to be intoxicated.

Investigators at Pattaya City Police Station will question both sides, examine CCTV footage and collect other evidence. They will also check the allegation concerning the missing motorcycle before deciding what legal action will follow.

A intoxicated 28 year old man beating up an old 70 year old man because he suspected the old man was involved in stealing a motorcycle?

Throw the punk in jail and throw away the keys ☠️.

Don't think you can hide behind your age or your gender here in Thailand. A young Thai man has little qualms about giving a elderly man or woman a slap if he perceives you are being cheeky!

Good job done RTP.
