UN human rights experts say there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes in two strikes on Iran that killed at least 177 civilians, including children.

The UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran said attacks on a primary school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd appeared to be indiscriminate, causing deaths and damage to civilian infrastructure.

School strike left 156 dead

The deadliest incident came on 28 February, when a missile struck Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, killing at least 156 people, including 120 children, according to local authorities.

The investigators said the school was clearly identifiable and found no evidence it was being used for military purposes. They said evidence, including reporting about a preliminary US military inquiry and the fact that the US possesses Tomahawk missiles, gave them reasonable grounds to believe American forces carried out the attack.

The US has previously denied striking Lamerd and said it was investigating the Minab incident. Washington has rejected the fact-finding mission’s conclusions, while the US military has not publicly released its investigation into the school strike.

Lamerd attack adds to mounting pressure

A second strike on the same day hit a sports complex and nearby residential area in Lamerd, killing at least 21 civilians, including seven children, according to Iranian authorities.

The UN experts said evidence indicated the attack was carried out with Precision Strike Missiles and again found reasonable grounds to believe the US was responsible. American officials have disputed both the reported weapon and claims that the US conducted a strike on Lamerd that day.

UN also accuses Iran of brutal crackdown

The report separately found that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during the suppression of mass protests in December 2025 and January 2026.

Investigators cited killings, mass arrests, torture and alleged attacks on wounded protesters and healthcare workers. They said the death toll could be substantially higher than Iran’s official figure and reported that at least 29 men had been executed following expedited trials linked to the unrest.

The mission said civilians in Iran were caught between serious abuses by their own government and the deadly conflict involving the US and Israel.

Sadly, it is and always has been, because the 5 Permanent Members, are still fighting the aftermath of WW2 and the Cold War, personnel interests first, before anything else.
