President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he will seek to create a new “AI Force” and appoint an “AI czar”, as concerns grow over the pace of artificial intelligence development.

In a post on social media, Trump continued to defend the technology while dismissing warnings about AI alignment as a “hoax”. He said the United States would not stop the growth of the industry, arguing instead that it should be supported while the country watches over its development.

An AI Force to Watch for “Bad” Uses

Trump said the proposed “AI Force” would focus on the negative aspects of AI, comparing the idea to the creation of Space Force during his first term.

He also said he planned to name an AI czar in the near future. It was not clear what responsibilities the AI czar would have, or what specific tasks the “AI Force” would be assigned.

A Space Force falls under the US Department of Defense and was established by an act of Congress in 2020 as a sixth branch of the armed forces. Trump’s proposal for another force would likely require further congressional action.

Limits on New Rules

Trump’s comments also appeared to reject the view that additional regulation is necessary to protect wider society from risks linked to misaligned AI systems. He argued that existing legal systems already provide tools to address harmful behaviour.

He wrote that the United States would identify “bad” outcomes and handle them through the current criminal and civil justice system, while describing his plan for an “AI Force” in the same announcement.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Calls to Slow Development and Add Guardrails

Trump’s announcement comes after warnings from leaders in the technology sector about potential dangers from rapidly improving AI.

Last week, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published a call to slow the pace of AI development. Shortly after, Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said his company would welcome a slower development rate to help ensure AI capabilities do not advance ahead of alignment and monitoring.

Some lawmakers have also urged additional guardrails for AI, reflecting broader concerns about how AI systems could behave in ways that are difficult to control.

Trump previously responded to similar warnings by describing them as a “hoax” and saying there was a “sick conspiracy” around AI.

His latest remarks were also similar to comments made by David Sacks, a co-chair of Trump’s science and technology council, who told a Politico event on Wednesday that new regulations were not necessarily the starting point.

Sacks said the United States already has a highly regulated administrative system, with existing laws and agencies that issue rules relevant to AI.

Unclear Scope as Debate Continues

While Trump outlined the broad concept of a new “AI Force” and the appointment of an AI czar, he did not provide details on how the proposed structure would operate, what powers it would have, or how it would coordinate with existing regulators.

As the debate continues, the administration’s stance contrasts with calls from parts of the tech industry and some lawmakers for slower development and tighter oversight mechanisms.

The problem with Trump's assertion is that AI introduces totally unprecedented issues!

Traditional laws assume a human designed a specific flaw. Good luck using existing product liability laws on an autonomous "black box" AI that hallucinates, mutates code, or acts independently of human oversight.

Trump's "AI Force" might sound tough, but trying to police frontier tech with old laws is like bringing a horse and buggy to a drag race.

AI is keeping US economy afloat. Trump will not intervene or regulate. This is just lip service. He is destroying US brick by brick.
