Whilst this is predominantly a Thailand forum it's moved into South East Asia and may I ask kindly the expats from other Countries such as Philippines Vietnam Cambodia Myanmar Malaysia ( have I missed any ) to reply

I was actually watching a YouTube channel called vagabond awake where the guy interviews expats from all countries who live frugally

Whilst not in Asia he interviewed an old Aussie guy who lived on $1000 a month US in a place called Bolivia , had to Google it , apparently it's in South America

But could we get back to the original topic please !!!!

I would like or should I say love ..you guys who live as an expat anywhere other than "washed out " Thailand

May I ask the UK readers , is it true that Spain has the second most UK expats other than Thailand?

Now could I ask you to please get back to the topic , most of you seem to get sidetracked !!

Is there any expats here who live in Philippines Cambodia Malaysia borneo ....no I'm not saying Bolivia !!

Far as I can tell as long as you avoid West Asia or North Asia, you'll be just fine.

How many years will it take you to choose a place to retire?

For Philipinnes, I would watch Youtubers living there as there seems to be a wave of crimes against foreigners there recently. Maybe only in certain parts of the country. But do your research before moving there. It's not as safe as Thailand.

Thailand is very far from 'washed out'. I have worked in several Asian countries and lived in others around the Globe. I picked Thailand as my final destination in life for its ease of living, its cultural environment, its weather (generally much better than many alternatives), its modern infrastructure, its friendly people and its good looking ladies. Sounds pretty near perfect to me.

Despite the illusion of a good place for expat retirees, the Philippines has never been a particularly safe place for foreigners to live. Thirty years ago, a friend of mine was living in an expensive gated community in Manila with armed guards, and even then he told me he didn't feel safe.

The few recent killings of expat retirees that have made the news aren't necessarily anything new. Home invasions have long been a problem there, and in some cases people are killed. In that respect, it reminds me a bit of parts of South America.

When I was last there, about 25 years ago, I remember going into a shopping mall and visiting a bank branch. Even in a well-lit shopping mall, the bank had two armed guards at the entrance to the bank holding sawed-off shotguns, with bandoliers displaying at least a dozen or more shells across their chests.

It has always struck me as a very rough place.

Thailand is my base, but Malaysia and Vietnam are interesting comparisons because daily costs and the pace of life can feel quite different. For anyone considering a move, spending a few weeks in each place first seems like the best way to judge what really suits them.
