Trump threatens Iran with ‘annihilation’ — then talks for three hours

Trump’s Iran ultimatum

Donald Trump used his UN General Assembly speech to deliver his starkest warning yet to Tehran, saying he faces a choice between reaching a deal with Washington or being “annihilated”. Trump said he could “annihilate the Islamic Republic” quickly if Iran refuses an agreement, while insisting the US objective remains preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He also called on other countries to join Washington in imposing complete economic isolation on Iran.

Then came the talks

Yet behind the explosive rhetoric, diplomacy was already under way. Trump revealed that US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held three hours of talks with an Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Trump described the meeting as “very productive” and said another meeting was expected “in the very near future”.

Hormuz is part of the deal

The talks also appear closely linked to the future of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a huge volume of global energy supplies normally passes. Iranian officials have indicated that reopening commercial shipping could depend on US concessions, including easing the naval blockade and releasing frozen Iranian assets. Reuters reported that Tehran has been signalling possible movement on Hormuz as the diplomatic pressure builds.

Tehran pushes back

Iranian officials have rejected Trump's threats, with Iran's armed forces describing his UN comments as “propaganda” and warning that any fresh attack would meet a severe response. At the same time, reports from Tehran suggest there are disagreements inside Iran over how far to go with any new negotiating position, adding another complication to the diplomatic effort.

The strange message from New York

So the message coming out of the UN is distinctly mixed: Trump is threatening to destroy Iran if it refuses a deal, while American and Iranian officials are simultaneously trying to find one. Trump has suggested an agreement could come after the US midterm elections, but the immediate focus appears to be whether the two sides can bridge their differences over the war, Iran's nuclear programme and the reopening of Hormuz.

I guess genocide is official US policy now, kind of a Trumpian "Final Solution". It seems Trump got his ideas from those books of Hitler speeches his 1st wife Ivana wrote (in her book) that he kept on the night stand beside the bed.

Well, let's hope there's a Nuremberg to try such an evil person, and if convicted, do the needful.

Ideally the US still has a general or two with moral courage, who would stand up to the clown if he wanted to use nukes. The fallout, both figurative and literal, would be devastating. Any nation suffering radiation exposure would be fully justified going after Trump. Certainly that would include both India and Pakistan, two nuclear powers who would suffer as winds blew fallout their way, and even Thailand would likely see radiation and subsequent cancer deaths over time.

The US would be an international pariah, and Americans would likely become unwelcome anywhere, save for their own declining nation.

Always a real Joy and an uplifting thought for the world to ponder an insane world leader threatening to kill millions of people from one of the world's most ancient civilizations.

Of course the reality is even if he did kill a million Iranians it still wouldn't end this absolutely ridiculous, useless forever war of choice. The only time a bomb has ended a war was at the end of World War II when the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan. It can be argued that there was moral justification for that as the Japanese did not seem intent on surrendering. Another argument could be made that the second nuclear bomb was not necessary as the first one certainly made its point.

No argument could be made to justify dropping a nuclear bomb on Iran. America and Israel are the aggressors, and they are guilty of destabilizing the world to a dramatic degree.
