More than 100 Israeli settlers have attacked a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank, setting fire to homes and vehicles and preventing a displaced family from returning to its property.

The violence erupted in Jalud near Nablus as the Tubasi family attempted to return home after being driven out by previous settler attacks. The Israeli military confirmed that more than 100 Israelis took part in the unrest.

Family’s return turns into another night of violence

The Tubasi family had been displaced from its home in July following repeated attacks. When relatives tried to return on Monday night, settlers blocked roads, burned tyres and attacked the area.

Two buildings belonging to the family were set on fire, while their vehicle was also torched. Israeli security forces said rioters threw rocks at them and set fire to Palestinian-owned property.

Israeli forces struggle to contain the attack

The military said the family’s return had been coordinated but ultimately could not take place because of the violence. Police said three people were arrested following the attack.

The episode has drawn condemnation from Israel’s political leadership, with President Isaac Herzog calling the violence a “moral stain” and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying he “strongly” condemned it.

West Bank violence is accelerating

The Jalud attack comes amid a wider escalation in settler violence. UN humanitarian officials have documented hundreds of attacks this year, with violence and access restrictions contributing to a sharp rise in Palestinian displacement.

OCHA said more than 1,600 Palestinians had already been displaced by settler violence and related access restrictions by early May, with the figure continuing to rise through the year.

A widening crisis over security and accountability

The latest attack has intensified scrutiny of how Israeli authorities respond to violent settlers. Israel ended the use of administrative detention against West Bank settlers in 2024, a policy that had allowed suspects to be held without charge.

For Palestinians in communities such as Jalud, the immediate issue is more basic: whether families driven from their homes can return without facing another attack.
