Dentist Recommendation

Recommended Posts

I am a devotee of the beautiful Dr. Aree DDS in International hospital (Soi 4). This morning, she quoted me 10k for the root canal and 20k for the post, cap, etc.

I've trusted her for a few years based on board recommendations but now I'm wondering if this price is right or over the top. I don't mind paying for her quality work and the peace of mind she will do a great job. However, like anyone else, I don't want to overpay.

Who's your dentist and have you ever had a root canal in Thailand or elsewhere? What did you pay and how long was the entire treatment from day 1 to finish? Thank you.

I have had three root canals, the last with post and followed by gold and ceramic crown at Grace Clinic in Chiang Mai. As you will see in many posts regarding Grace Clinic in T.V. it is considered the most expensive in Chiang Mai and certainly world class in quality. Most of the dentists are professors of dentistry at Chiang Mai University within their own specialties and many have foreign degrees.

Dr. Korakot graduated from Boston University School of Denistry and she is the one who did my crown work.

Root canal over three appointments was 8K baht in May 2007 followed by the crown for 10K.

I asked Dr. Korakot why the price had gone up 2k since my two crowns last year and she said that since there is a gold base to the ceramic crown, the price is affected by world gold prices as well as lab materials prices. Also, crowns for molars are priced higher than crowns for upper front teeth, where I had my prior crowns.

Dr. Korakot has many patients who take dental vacations to Chiang Mai from the U.S. She also has only one price for their work at the clinic and Thais pay the same as falang and there are many Thais who use the clinic as well.

I asked her about the time it took the root canal specialist to earn 8k in fees, ie. three hours and her 20 minute prep and 20 install time for the crown and she said the difference in the price was the materials used, of course. I do know that she spends longer with some patients, especially the gabby ones like me, never cuts me off or seems to be to busy to answer questions.

I actually fell asleep during my root canal, can you believe?

I have had excellent dental care in more than one country, but mostly in the U.S., but none compare with what I have received at Grace.

I have had three root canals.....

Very good post. Thank you. Pattaya International (Soi 4) wants 10k for the root canal and then another 8 for the cap/post/whatever. I'll have to shop around or does anyone feel it's worth the extra expenditure to go with who you know?

the costs for root canal treatment depend on which tooth is being treated.

incisors have only one root , with one canal and the tooth is easily accessible , upper molars are harder to work on and the canals can be very difficult to locate , hence the treatment can take longer , demands more skill and costs more.

lower molars have 2 roots with 3 canals , and upper molars have three roots with 3 canals.

My post won't help you much other than RCT takes 3-4 visits, maybe 5 if there is a veener at the end.

In a private dental clinic in my office's building at Shinjuku, Tokyo, all that (RCT, 4 visits, regular filling - back tooth) was altogether 870 baht. On each of the visits I paid my share with - coins!

Since I learned how much my Japanese national health insurance covers, I forgot Thai dentists.

I am not very found of the small private clinics around Pattaya you may pay a bit more at PIH but I find the extra money is worth it.

The WORST hospital in the entire area when it comes down to integrity is without doubt Pattaya Bangkok. They really should take a long hard look at themelves. The day all expats see them for what they are, cheating robbing ba**ards, and refused to go truelly would be a great day.

EPG.

They have.

The new (larger) wing is just opening. So their "look at themselves" just make them feel bigger. Double.

That explanation was proabably only an excuse to put up the price because there are only small quantities of gold in gold inlay/onlays and even less in a ceramic crown (with gold base) and fluctuations in the world gold prices would have a negligiable affect on their cost.

Apart form that, gold price hasn't changed much in the last year.

I have to disagree with you here. I went there 3 years ago and spent nearly 25 hours in the dental chair over a 6 week period. Had lots of work done, including 3 root canals and gold crowns, they saved a tooth at the back that a dentist in the UK said would need to be pulled. The total cost was about 70,000 baht. Sure not cheap, but a lot cheaper than the UK.

The service was excellent.

I do agree you should go to a dentist you trust, never mind the cost and I will go to BPH next time.

Mind you I would not go there for any other operation. They yold me I needed an operation on my hip. The information they gave me - which included me having the operation ASAP was a pack of lies. In fact they would have completed the operation by now, which is totally against the recommendations of Worldwide medical advice in this area.

Both myself and my wife have had dental treatment at BPH and mine was extensive root canal and crown work, and i would NOT recommend them on any account, and would never go there again.

My wife had a few simple fillings (which transpired were not necessary) and has been in pain, off and on, ever since.

If money is not a problem I really recommend the Dental hospital, Soi 39 Sukhumvit Road,Bangkok. It is without doubt the best dental hospital I have been in anywhere in the world (and you will see many letters from farangs displayed there which agree with me), and they clearly retain the cream of Thailand's dentists. They speak good English, will not prescribe unnecessary treatment, and in comparison to the pain and discomfort I experienced when receiving treatment at BPH, I was in 7th heaven.

If you drive, you can be at the hospital (underground parking) before 9 a.m. and back in Pattaya before it gets dark. Alternatively you can get a bus to Ekami and from there a short taxi ride to the hospital.

I, and several of my friends, have used Dr Chanis for years; he is great and not expensive. His clinic is rxactly opposite Friendship Supermarket, next to All Seasons Travel.

I have a cracked and infected tooth requiring root canal treatment. I discovered this clinic (Chanis Dental Clinic, Tel: 038 426 018) purely by chance while looking for a cheap dentist on the South Pattaya Road.

(I am an invalid living in Asia on a very small pension, hence reducing the cost is imperative.)

South Pattaya Road is littered with dental clinics and most of them seem to be very modern, very large, and very well-lit - and that was why I would nearly have walked by and missed Dr Chanis' clinic, which was only conspicuous by its unpretentiousness, smallness, and poor lighting.

For a moment I considered that although it did look cheap it was probably also risky, however, the overhead sign included a crucial piece of info: "Since 1983", which I took to mean that this was no quack. Moreover, a Western lady waiting in the ante-room told me she had used this dentist several times and was very satisfied.

A subsequent Google search, too, did not reveal any complaints, so I decided to submit my dental rot to the kind attention of Dr Chanis (indeed he does have a kindly countenance, too).

What is remarkable is that a root canal treatment on a bottom 6 tooth, which is a MOLAR, will cost me only 3500 baht, considering that Pattaya Memorial would charge 6000 for the same procedure, and none of the other private clinics I visited would do it for under 5000 baht!

I underwent the 1st session yesterday, and everything seems to be in order... I will report again once the treatment is over.

Sure go somewhere in Pattaya, you might get lucky... I got VERY unlucky and wouldn't recommend anyone to visit a Pattaya dentist. No decent dentist would accept a job in Pattaya, sex tourism capital of the world. Great place for a holiday but do yourself a favour and take the bus to Bangkok for 113thb and pick a top clinic.

These are some good Bangkok clinics where they will have good and modern equipment, something you will not find in Pattaya!

Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC)

Bumrungrad Hospital - Dental Center

Dental Hospital

Thantakit Dental Clinic

Silom Dental Building

I wish I knew the facility name. It is located in Jomtien number +66-38-251289

He is a German Dentist and has his own shop for making the crowns so you do not have to wait weeks with temporary crown. It was few years ago and the cost was about $350/$350 I guess that is a bit high but an exceptional place. I might be wrong on the price but it was a exceptional service.
