Overstay 48,000 Baht Max - Hoax!

Ching or Mai ching??

So I've heard.

Admin comment:

Hoax. No change in overstay charges or maximum charges for overstay in Thailand.

Please see below

Stickman quoted 48k is his column today. But who really knows.

I think it's quite generous to have a maximum at all. If I were in charge, you'd pay the per-day fine with no upper limit.

Rumor from stickmanbangkok.com 2004-08-08:

Overstaying one's visa is a fairly dumb thing to do but some people still do it, claiming that the overstay charge is not that expensive and that so long as the bill is settled on the way out, there are no problems.  Well, be warned that immigration overstay charges have apparently gone up!  I am informed that they put the fines up on 10 July to 400 baht per day with the maximum fine now topping out at 48,000 baht.

FACTS:

I have tonight double checked (today at 20.35pm) with the Inspector of Don Muang Immigration, Departure hall:

This is the current overstay rules:

1. First day overstay, no charge but a (small little) blue stamp in your passport

2. After day 1, it's 200 Baht per day including the first day. Blue overstay stamp in passport.

Example:

Two days overstay is 2x200 Baht = 400 Baht

Three days overstay is 3x200 Baht = 600 Baht

3. Over 99 days overstay in the Kingdom: Maximum 20,000 Baht fine regardless of overstay lenght. Blue stamp in the passport. No blacklisting regardless of lenght of overstay.

Stickman's website was misinformed.

On Stick's site this week he says it is unconfirmed, in other words, a rumour.

It would not be an unreasonable approach.

It is only US$10 a day.

Try getting back into the UK, US, OZ and many others after overstaying!!

Just to be able to confirm George's source, I just called a friend in headquarters and asked him about the rumor; re said exactly the same thing George's source did -- no change.

The difference being those places are not actively seeking people and Thailand is. These comparisons invariably seem to come up every time some inane Thai Immigration rule/regulation is discussed. The crux of these discussions need to address the aforementioned difference to have any validity. If the rules/regulations were truly effective in keeping undesireables out... or if they truly did limit bad guys from arriving or staying in Thailand, then that would make things different and could then even be supported. The problem is that most of the rules/regulations only generate hardships or inconviences for the average person. They generate monies for the few controlling members of the government which never seems to filter down, eg. Immigration Ministry services are often abysmal despite the not-so-recent 400% increase in fees.

Huh? Since when has Thailand been looking for immigrants?

And I think it is a very, very minimal requirement indeed that people not overstay the period of stay which they have been granted.

Is this a joke? Raising the minimum income requirements as a method to actively search for immigrants?

Have you got any idea what Thai rak Thai means?

It's directly related to the number of medals that the Thais will win at the Olympics, they love themselves so much that they can't outperform other countries.
