Mate, the perfumes, cheese and chocolates are really just the icing on the cake — they’re hardly the reason I bother returning to Australia. 😂 The big-ticket item for me is health insurance. I like travelling to non-Asian countries as well as Australia, so if I were arranging my own private cover in Thailand, I’d want worldwide cover rather than Thailand-only or Asia-Pacific cover. And that’s where the numbers get interesting. Current estimates for a 70-year-old are roughly ฿450,000–900,000 a year for worldwide comprehensive cover — potentially close to a million baht a year. 😂 I get worldwide travel insurance free with my Australian credit card, so regularly returning to Australia and retaining my eligibility for Medicare, plus the other benefits, makes a hell of a lot more sense for me than simply looking at the airfare and saying, “That costs more than the $2,400 supplement.” Everyone’s circumstances are different, of course. If someone is happy with Thailand-only cover, never travels outside Asia and doesn’t value the other Australian benefits, the maths will obviously look different. But for my circumstances, the $2,400 isn’t the whole calculation. Let me know if you want me to continue doing the math. 😂
