Hybrid solar system installed yesterday - Now shocks from spin dryer.

Featured Replies

Hi!

Solar crew installed an earth rod. No earthing in my house previously. Today I'm experiencing shocks when removing my damp laundry from the drum of the spin dryer of my plastic twin tub washing machine. The more clothes I remove, the stronger the shocks. I've abandoned that and told my Mrs to be careful. Unfortunately, she doesn't comprehend. What's best to do?

Unplug the machine and don’t use it.

Your earthing isn’t correctly bonded.

Tell the technicians who installed your earth ground. They probably didn't do a ground safety test on your earth ground before hooking up the earth ground to your breaker panel.

Ground safety check < 100b

They probably have no clue what they are doing. 😃

you can check earthing with multi meter, although you already know it's not right ...

Thanks for your prompt reply. That was my first thought. However, my Mrs is now awake although very bad tempered and throwing things at me. She tells me it's coincidence. She has previously experienced shocks from the spin dryer and now always unplugs the washing machine before unloading. Unfortunately, although I use the machine myself daily, she didn't tell me. Sheer fluke that I haven't received any shocks until today and also an incredible coincidence. Such is life! Or maybe electrocution?

Thanks for prompt reply. I'm suspicious of all 'trademen' too. In my particular case it appears to be a pre-existing fault with the washing machine that my wife discovered but neglected to get fixed/replaced or tell me about.

Great information thank you. Apparently the fault is with the washing machine which my wife knew about but didn't get fixed/replaced and also forgot to tell me about. Moving on, we now have an earth connection to the new consumer unit. Bringing that earth to our two pin sockets (installed throughout the house) would be preferable in my view. However, for two pin appliances there would be zero benefit. Incidentally, our washing machine is only two pin (hence I think in terms of double insulation). Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped the plastic drum of the spin dryer becoming live when wet.

The ground rod is likely for the solar installation, which would likely have nothing to do with the lack of ground in the existing wiring.

Drive a ground-rod for your laundry room receptacle and buy your wife an automatic washer chiseler.

I was going to ask if even having 3 pin outlets, but figured you already knew the need to upgrade if not having.
