I've just come back to the Uk for a short trip and whilst here ,I thought I would get a new passport, as I only had two pages left in my old one. In the old one I have a one year dependance visa which runs out in jan 2008 and a re-enrty visa. How do I transfer this visa from one passport to the other.

Do I do it at immigration in Thailand

Or can I do it at the Thai consulate in Hull.

If I arrive in Thailand and the visa is in my old passport, which has now been cancelled for travelling purposes, will they just give me 30days, or do I show them both passports at the same time.

Any advice is welcome as I don't get my passport back (as per telephone call from passport office today) until next Monday and I fly back on the Wednesday

Have not seen any reports but believe you would show the old passport re-entry permit. After arrival you would have to visit immigration to have extension of stay transferred. In worst case they could say only a 30 day visa exempt stamp and you would have to re do the extension but believe they will most likely accept the re-entry permit.

I got a new UK passport a few years ago, my old passport had a number of valid visas in it, including a Thai 1 year multiple non B.

When I got my old uk passport back, the pages with valid visas in had had the top right corners folded in and then the top right corner had been clipped off the whole passport. Thus the passport pages with valid visas and entry stamp were still intact as you could fold them back out.

At Thai customs I showed both passports and in those days (2004/2005) they made a mark in the new passport referring the entry stamps to the visa in the old passport, which I continued to use on my 90 day runs until the visa expired.

If it's any help.i got a new passport, the old passport was near to out of date but had about 7 months of a multiple entry non imm O visa in it,I was told the visa would not be transfered but i must use both passports to travel with until the visa expired,i did this each time i had to leave Thailand and the Thai immigration at Cambodia border wrote in the new passport each time that the old visa was in old passport.Iwould think the same would apply to you.Or at least if you always carry the 2 you should have no problem.

This is the correct advice, I have been in the same situation and did not have any problems.

NB Immigration will not transfer visas from one passport to another,

only entry stamps.

Thnaks for the advice.

I was told by the lady at the passport office that they would only cut the corners off the two outside covers of the passport, making the passport invalid for travel, but the pages inside would still be valid. So waht you are saying about keeping both passports with you seems to make sense. I'll give it a try and hope everything goes OK. You never know TIT.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for this clear answers. One question remains though.

Is it necessary to get a new entry stamp in the new passport (at the immigration office)?

Or will the entrystamp in the old passport be enough when leaving Thailand?

The rules say you should go to immigration and get visas transferred so that the TM6 departure card ties into the new passport. Anecdotally some people do not and usually immigration at the border are OK about it, but if for example, you have a reasonable period of time between receiving your new passport and travelling then it would be better to get the visa transferred. It would also potentially be dependent on what you are doing, i.e.: going home is probably less of an issue, doing a 'visa run' might be questioned.

Sorry to disagree, I had a new passport issued in April this year and went to Immigration at Jomtien, they transfered my current permission to stay (retirement) to my new passport along with my departure card and current 90 day reporting slip. When I renewed my extension to stay they then inserted the usual new stamp. This meant there was a clear trail in my new passport with both old and new extensions and the departure card. I have since done my 90 day reporting and had the new slip placed in my passport.( I even removed their staple and replaced it with a paper clip as it was damaging the new passport)

However, it is fair to say I have not left the country so I cannot comment on what may or what may be asked at my departure point and as I have no reason to leave the country that could be a long way off, if ever!

They transfer permission to stay and extensions of stay, as you say. But they do not transfer "visas" as the other poster said. Two different things.

In 2004 I did a border run after getting a new British Passport. I took both passports with me.

Thai Immigration at the Malaysian border accepted my last entry stamp and departure card in my old passport. The old passport had the corners clipped off all pages except those with my last (valid) Thai entry stamp and a number of pages with current visas I had then, including a Thai 1 year multiple non-immigrant B visa; these unclipped pages were still valid for travel. When I re-entered Thailand I showed both passports and got a new Permission to Enter for 90 days.

My new passport was issued by the British Embassy (FCO) in Bangkok.

I continued to show both passports on re-entry, until I got a new 1 year multiple non B in my new passport, the following year.

Hope this helps
