Widely Available Performance Engines?

What types of engines are widely available and widely used in engine swaps in Thailand? It seems that the Toyota 2JZ-GTE and the Nissan SR20DET are quite popular. How much do these engines cost usually? How much does it usually cost for a transplant? Are there any other engines I should consider?

The 2JZ engines are indeed widely popular in Thailand.

Not sure of the price of the twin turbo gte version, but both the 2.5 liter 1JZ and 3 liter 2JZ atmospheric versions are available between 30,000 and 60,000 BAht, depending on quality (overhauled or not).

Installing will again depend on what car you want to put it in, but 15 to 20 thousand seems to be the average. Note that the engine prices are including gearbox!

Never seen the Nissan engines yet though, every one of the conversions I've seen are with the Toyota engines. Maybe the Supra's get crashed more often :o

The 2jz and the 1jz are the most widely used engines, especially for street cars. As the previous poster said, you can pay anywhere from 25k up to 80k depending on condition and source of the engine. Whatever you do make sure it comes with papers if you are going to transplant it into a street car, as without the right docs you wont be able to register it in the new car.

Costs vary for the actual work depending on where and what you do. Some transplants will need a new diff installing, new engine mounts, new manifolds etc. Again, the scope and quality of this work will obviously increase the price.

The engine you choose will depend on your needs. What do you want to do with the car when it's finished? Street driving, track driving, drag?

If you dont mind higher fuel bills you could use the Toyota/Lexus 1UZ. It's a 4 litre V8, and if you're staying NA it will give you that bit of extra torque.

Track time at Bira cost 500 baht for the day, on days when there are no competitions.

I don't mind higher fuel bills. The 1UZ sounds like a very good suggestion except that it seems that a lot of fabrication work has to be done to mate it to a manual transmission.

How much does a VQ35DE engine cost in Thailand?

500 baht is a really good price for an entire day of track time. :o

Yup, you're dead right! A lot of work. And I've not seen one here in Thailand.

I believe a 35 would cost anything from 80k upwards, but don't know for sure.

If it goes into a Cefiro or a 200SX the only thing it will be good for is street/drag. However if you go with an SR20 in a 200SX then you will have a track capable car.

I only spend 1 or 2 months in Thailand per year so I would like to keep costs down. At home I drive/track a Lotus Exige S and I race karts and would like something similar in terms of performance and handling. But then again, I don't think I could stand driving a Lotus around in Bangkok. I've narrowed my choices down to the following chassis:

E30 (convert/tune to something similar to E30M3 - might be too small to fit 2JZ in it and still retain good weight distribution)

E36 (comfortable and sporty)

FC3 (older RX7)

AE86

E39

E38 (really comfortable and roomy rwd. I probably wouldn't track it)

Silvia (240sx - still a bit expensive at $1,000,000 THB)

I'm really leaning towards an E30 due to how light it is. E30 chassis are also really cheap in Thailand. I'll probably have the chassis stripped, cleaned, reinforced and painted. I might also put in a rollcage. I will also want to put in a coilover suspension kit. I hope that there are readily available aftermarket parts in Thailand for the E30. I'll probably also install the E30 M3 Evolution (or similar) bodykit on it.

I might also go with a larger car because I'll be more likely to survive a collision. :o

What kind of car do you own and do you track it at Bira Circuit? Does Thailand have time trial competitions?

We run a Subaru Impreza with a stroked EJ20 (now 2.4L) and two cefiros, one with a 2JZ GTE and one with a 1UZ.
