For Those That Think Thai Justice Is Too Harsh

Featured Replies

Smartest move this guy has done was to get on a flight to Canada before the Thai authorities could catch him.

Despite the Canadian judge acknowledging that this guy is a threat to children "under 14", he set bail at a ridicuously low figure of $5,000 (Cdn) !!!!

Canadian wanted in Thailand granted bail in B.C.

There are certain conditions set as well (i.e. he has to stay away from children unless he is under adult supervision). But in reality, once his family coughs up $500 to a bail-bondsman, this guy is free to walk the streets (and possibly disappear and/or re-offend again).

It is extemely unlikely Canada will ever extradite this guy to Thailand, knowing the much harsher penalties he would face if found guilty there (it would be against his "human rights").

How ever, the law that allows Canada to prosecute it's citizens for certain crimes committed in other countries, hasn't really been used despite being in place for years. There are questions regarding the constitutionality of the law, and I'm sure there will be plenty of lawyers (paid by Legal Aid) who will scramble for the opportunity to ride a cash cow like this for a couple of years.

In the end, the courts will probably toss the case out for lack of evidence, or various procedural reasons, and he'll be free to go where ever he wants.

How many people would consider that justice for the crime in question ? A few days in jail until his family comes up with the bail, a few court appearances over a couple of years (all the while free to do pretty much what ever he wants), and the distinct possibility of walking away scot free.

Had the Thai authorities caught him first, it is not too likely that he would have been granted bail at all. He would sit in prison (or remand) until his trial, which would certainly happen a lot sooner than in Canada, and if found guilty (most likely scenario), he would rot in prison for many years.

Too harsh ? What if it had been your child ? Still think a few dollars and minor inconvenience (Canadian Justice) is punishment enough ?

I'm calling my MP in the morning. :o

Actually, she's a bleeding heart. I'll call someone else's.
