Half of youths do not use condom for casual sex: Public Health

BANGKOK: -- Youths start having sex as young as 15 years old and up to half of them do not use condoms as they trust their partners, a senior public health official said Thursday.

Speaking at a seminar titled Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise, Doctor Somchai Pinyopornphanit, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, said the monitoring by his department in 2006 found that youths started having casual sex as young as 15 years old.

He said the monitoring found that more than 50 per cent of youths did not use condoms as they trusted their partners, who are mostly their friends.

But, he said, the HIV infection rate in Thailand has dropped from 140,000 a year earlier to only 14,000 tis year.

So far from 2004 to this year, about 1 million people have got HIV and 14,000 of them got the virus this year. He said many of them have died, leaving about 546,578 people with HIV.

This is old news, heard about it 6 years ago. Apparently the thai kids aren't proficient in using condoms cause of their 'gonk ' size and lack of awareness at schools.

(sigh)

Condom is the best thing ever happens for casual sex. What they are thinking not using it? Well, probably they are NOT thinking at all, that's why.

We males were all once inexperienced and totally oblivious to the perils of a little slap and tickle, and in those early days our brains resided in that lanky thing that now need protection. :o

546,578 I am very impressed they now know exactly how many have AIDs,

in blighty we are not as exact.

Los is the leader in adising how many have aids.. down to the last person

First time with my girl she never even mentioned using protection and when I questioned this she told me she was never taught in school (she left 3 years ago). I insisted incase I had anything myself. I've been tested since and got the all clear as has she so it's good to go now.

If your going to be promiscuous though it's a good idea to "suit up".

Being well prepared is not a hallmark of the country in general. Being prepared is not a hallmark of youth anywhere.

I thought that in the proper use of condoms only half of the participants needs to use a condom, preferably the male who is engaged in the penetrating. Am I missing something?

:D You got that right, but what about the gays I don't know or care to, but guess each one would be penetrating :D:o:D

No matter what, no matter who (gay, straight, bi, tri, metro, homo) - the point here is condom is needed and the must for casual sex.

End of story.

From what I have been able to determine speaking with various school counsellors, the problem of student sexual activity comes up earlier than 15- with some M1 girls (at 13-ish) having occasionally become pregnant.

I'm glad that a government official had the guts to point out the problems of condom awareness- but I'm even more impressed in this weird Victorian atmosphere fostered by the Ministry of Culture that he's even able to admit that ANYONE has sex- now, if only they can get the rest of the government on board to DO something about sexual safety without destroying the message by referring to abstinence and "Thai values" as the solution- but to promote safe and healthy sexual practices you have to admit first that people are having sex. And as many others have mentioned it's a concern not only for the young but ALSO for everyone else.

I think this may fall under the 60-20-20 as for the age sexual activity starts.
