May I ask have you ever had customers that are so troublesome that beatings are the only ways you can resort to?

Just being curious since you have opened go go bars. :o

Norwegian beaten up, severely injured by Pattaya bar owner, workers

A Norwegian was beaten up and severely injured allegedly by a British bar owner and employees late Saturday night.

Police said Bjorn Tennebek, 45, was admitted to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital at 3:30 am Sunday.

His two eyes were badly injured with sprayed pepper and he suffered severe cuts on his head and had a badly-bruised face.

The man told police that the owner of Champagne Go-Go Bar on Soi Buakhao, Central Pattaya, assaulted him.

He said he went to drink at the bar Saturday night and when he was about to pay his bill, he found that he was overcharged by Bt60. When he asked the cashier to review the bill, the bar owner, who appeared to be a Briton, showed up and alleged that he was refusing to pay the bill.

The tourist told police that the Briton sprayed pepper over his eyes and had two or three bar workers drag him out and they started beating him.

He said passer-bys helped send him to the hospital.

Pattaya police chief Pol Col Noppadol Wongnom said he would later interrogate the Norwegian so that police would take legal action against the bar owner.

- The Nation

Pepper spray is supposed to be used to defend yourself and for protection.

Seems to me they used it in this case to put the Norwegian in a non defensive position and then cowardly attacked him via the instructions of the owner.

Pattaya can do without low life thugs like these, that,s for sure.

If of course the article is stating what actually happened then deport the foreigner after he,s served a a period in the Bangkok Hilton Jail and let the locals serve a long term holiday within.

The bar owner along with the individuals who carried out this alledged attack should face prosecution and be dealt with accordingly with the above outcome.

This is really entering dangerous territory for all of us, if it is not curtailed in relation to it,s use in this particular case.

Imagine how it,s use can be abused in assisting unlawful acts to render innocent passers by / individuals unable to react to attack ect. ect.

IMH and PO as always.

Keep watching the news for such anticipated and distrubing events in the non to distant future.

The following url is very informative from both a legal, a safety point of view along with the potential abuses, if anyone is interested.

Best not to jump to conclusions at this stage.

The gentleman of whom I speak, went looking for trouble, got the short end of the stick on both occasions and then went running to the police afterwards.

Rather silly, since he was the one who kicked off in the first place.

So I'm not inclined to jump to conclusions at the moment. At least, not until I see a pic.

Thank you for the link, marshbags.

It's very interesting to see the laws governing the use of pepper spray in regards to the two countries represented here.

In the United Kingdom, "Any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing" is classed as a section 5 firearm (Firearms Act 1968). The same act covers other prohibited weapons such as automatic firearms and rocket launchers, all of which can only be possessed by permission of the Home Secretary.

In Norway real pepper spray is only used by the police. The publicly available defense spray often called pepper spray is actually based on isopropyl alcohol.

The link should also remind us that pepper spray is not nearly as innocuous as many people might think.

have you ever been inside one of these bars? its the dregs of both western and thai society. you have a bunch of poor farm girls selling their pvssy trying to land a rich boyfriend thrice their age and weight and a bunch of middle aged men sitting there ogling them.

it seems unlikely that a former doctor or scientist decided "why dont i go down to pattaya and make some extra pocket change pimping out farm girls"... not necessarily impossible, but highly unlikely.

And yet former (or current) doctors and scientists happily visit those bars. If you don't know this then I can only assume that you personally don't spend a lot of time in those bars.

Which is fine.

But then you're not really super qualified to be commenting.

A number of my ex- work colleagues are Doctors, and they will often visit bars for a few beers when they are in town. I think that anyone with an ounce of common sense would understand the diversity of people visiting these places.

I think there is a difference between visiting and frequenting though., and it's highly unlikely that Doctors would socialise with trolls like Tony. :o

My apologies for stating earlier that the Owner (Jason) is not a Brit, when in fact he is, but due to the fact he has spent most of his life in Australia and speaks with an Australian accent, i put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5 in always presuming he was an Ozzie.

Does it really matter where either of them come from?

It is a sad thing if the patron was beaten up over 60 Baht. What is equally sad is the reputation Pattaya will get here. The Bar owner (since none of us knows what really happens) will be the bad guy, why? He is not in the hospital.

Pepper spray can be dangerous enough, depends on where it hits you. If I was sprayed first I would certainly retaliate with everything I have, that is called PANIC.

If the bar owner is innocent it which he might as well be (since we dont know what happened), the police will still come there and get their little brown envelope.

Sure you can see these things all over the world, but shocking news, beaten up over 60 Baht sells newspapers. Please think of the larger picture here... Someone will be punished, but I dont think it will be the right people.

Either way, all the bars in Pattaya will lose over this, scandinavians (there is a few of them there now) will be worried. English people will get a bad reputation again, and "peaceful" Pattaya will get another black mark in the tourist guides...

People come and people leave... Who really cares about what happened?

Part of the problem is that when I go out, I want to feel a certain amount of security and safety. Bars are prone to having a difficult crowd and bar owners and staff should be able to cope with them--or be on good enough terms with the BIB to have them help one out.

It's not particularly exciting to think I may get the crap beat out of me inside some bar--you can walk outside and find a fight if you want.

There are a lot of scenarios--and there may be one here that exonerates the bar owner--would be good to hear from him.

I had a friend who was out drinking one night. He was in some tart-bar and afterwards headed over to a different watering hole. He drank much of the night away and then discovered that his wallet had been lifted when he went to pay. The bar owner called the police (to report the wallet stolen), they came by took him down, took a report and the following day found his wallet at the previous establishment (minus the money). He then settled up with the bar owner at the other place.

Or I suppose the bar owner could have just beat him senseless.

Well, I think many of us would like to know what happened, and do care.

If Pattaya gets another "black mark", so be it. Tourists have a right to hear the facts about such events.

I posted what happened on the first page of this thread, it was nothing to do with 60 baht, the very drunken large Norwegian man was refusing to pay his bill, when confronted by Jason, he went for a bottle and jason just hit him once, then a customer in the club not Jason or any of his staff pepper sprayed the Norwegian. The OP is just the memory of a drunken Norwegian who had just been knocked out and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I'm sure there must be some BM's who also know Jaon on here and will vouch for him being a great stand up guy and this would be totaly out of character for him, but like he said it was him or me, if some drunk is going to bottle you what are you supposed to do????

Don't these types of fights happen all-over the world?? why has this small fight made the newspaper or even onto TV?? Seems tame compared to a night in Glasgow :D:D

Exactly. When I used to live in the UK, I saw druken fighting in just about every town and city across the country, every Friday and Saturday night.

I suspect the reason it hit the headlines is because there is an underlyng Thai philosophy that "farangs" are just one race, one country, one language, one people, really just manifestations of the same person. The fact that they are fighting each other suggests something wrong with the cosmic order of the universe.

There is a lot more violence in the uk than thailand, and anyone that thinks otherwise can take up my offer to walk through any decent sized town or city centre on a weekend night after 10pm and not see fighting, spewing, peeing in doorways etc, and the men are worse ! ...

Right, and then they call Americans boorish and vulgar :o

Struck a cord did i ? , im not joking, take a trip down union st in plymouth on a weekend, women are as bad as the men,. and no i dont go there, its all over the news every monday ,. another reason to live in LOS for me,

On the contrary marshbags. Pattaya thrives on low life thugs like this.

Having just returned from a golf weekend there, I can report that the quality of lowlife there is undiminished. Never have I seen so many tattooed necks. Never have I seen such ill-advised speedo-wearing on a beach.

Never have i heard the phrase 'faaaaaark orfffffff you <deleted>' elucidated so often.

I think Pattaya serves a useful purpose in attracting these halfwits and, thankfully, keeping them out of my environment.

So its a bunch of tattooed necked speedo wearing southerners on the beach then?

I always thought it wa strange down there - Margate with sun - we might have Del Boy and Rodder there in a "Beano" next.

My Burmese colleague was just talking about taking his wife and kids to "Pattaya Beach" - myself and another colleague (from Ghana) spent lunchtime convincing him to take them somewhere else in Thailand for a holiday.

I've always said those bluddy golfers are pure trouble just looking for a place to kick off.

btw I always thought 'faaaaaark orfffffff you <deleted>' was a technical golf term and the correct response to a request to play through. :o

But how many times was my question?

I have been to Thailand about 10 times for holidays. Everytime I was there in BKK and Pataya, I go out to bars discos, be they farang frequented or thai frequented, that sums up to about 50 nights I guess. I hop from bar to bar, discos to discos, until all are closed, then I will wander in the streets of BKK, not once had I seen one single fight. Am I just that lucky? Although by saying that, I am no way saying that it is a safe place. I did sense danger sometimes.

My point was that they are not that frequent but when they do kick off it escalates to another level very quickly.

I have probably been witness to about 7 or 8 serious fights here and a few other minor skirmishes too over the years.

I have seen a guy stabbed on Sukhumvit 71 when I was on my way home in a taxi, a guy who was actually killed on Soi Cowboy by an angry mob of Thais and another fight on Soi Cowboy where a couple of Japanese tourists were severely beaten to name but a few.

I've also seen several less serious fights between Western foreigners either on holiday or expats in various places around the city - Penny Black in Soi Cowboy and that bar outside Nana, Day & Night or something spring to mind.

I've also been involved in a couple over the years myself.

Thanks. :o

and i realize i am trolling a bit and meant it more light hearted than that but i cant see myself getting worked up because some idiots decide to have bar fight in the middle of the night in a go go bar in pattaya.

sometimes i try to close my eyes and see the world from other's eyes, and emphasis with them, like why they decided to get a large ugly tattoo of a lion on their shoulder, but i cant do it.

When you choose to socialise in such quality places, you can hardly be surprised to see such things. If you spend your life in the gutters, you can't expect to smell of roses.

I'm ashamed to say my life is much more boring. I have neither seen nor been involved in any fights in my (admittedly) lesser time in Bangkok.

Why does trouble tend to follow some people, and not others?

:o I was there between 1990 -1994, and it sounds like little has changed.

Had some good nights down there, but to be fair it always has had a reputation for trouble. Oh, how I miss those nights in the Star of Light cider house. :D

Us Brits (english) do like a good ruck on a weekend. What's wrong with that? A few teeth missing here and there, the odd broken nose, a pint or 2 of blood to fertilize the gound.

Roll on the weekend!! :D

So from now on, being Norwegian, you have to check the nationality of the owner before you have a few drinks in a bar?

Agreed, that 60 baht was nothing to argue over. I bet what happened was that he got the bill, found an error, voiced his complaint, and the cashier goes running to the manager saying that he refused to pay. And from there on it blew up.

Granted 60 baht isn't something to fight about, but being scandinavian myself I can telly you that we expect our receipts to be correct to the last baht. After that we have two groups. Those tha are to afraid to ever speak up. And those that do speak up and stand their ground furiously.

Im a Scandinavian myself, and you are correct.

But start arguing over 60 baht is silly. Unless the 60 baht was a high % of what the bill was supposed to be.

I dont know how long he sat there, only that he was sent to the hospital around 03:30??

I would have told them that I am not happy about it, but still I would have paid and then left.

Later on, I would have spread the info about padding (is that the word?) in that particular place.

Btw, I have a feeling that there are many "closet Scandinavians" in this Forum, since this little story has blown up as it has.
