Image Of Budda, What Does The Rear Writing Mean

Hi

I was recently give a set ( two ) of Budda Images, one large and one small.

I sent the small one to my sister in England, who is recovering from heart complaint.

She was really please and facinated by this image, however she had some questions about it that I am finding it hard to answer.

So any information would be most appreciated.

Note I can read and understand a small amount of Thai, to include the numbers.

I have tried several times to upload an image to the web, without success, I am at work on a ship, so the internet connection is very slow.

so I shall describe.

The Budda image I am told comes from Satorn, it is black and gold. The gold comes from the Satorn Budda. The Thai people apparently apply gold leaf to this Budda, they use some of this gold leaf to decorate the small images like mine.

On the back are markings in a kind of Circle, like an astrology chart, with Thai numberals on.

I am told it is some kind of sandscript.

My sister is asking why people apply gold leaf to the Budda.

Also what does the markings on the back mean.

I am bit surprized not may of my thai collegues who seem to have interest in amulets dont know what the symbol at the rear means. So we will all be very interested to find out more.

certainly a nice gesture for your sister Chris. However, isn't it highly illegal to remove Buddha images from Thailand?

I just read your post...

On front the amulett I see (at the right side of the Buddha image) the words เมืองแบดริ้ว (country or city of "Bad riow"). "Bad riow" is another (local) name of the Provinz of Chachoengsao (ฉะเชิงเทรา)

Literally "Bad riow" means "eight stripes" and in case you ask local people of Chachoengsao why they call their province "eight stripes", they will tell you that in former times the rivers of Chachoengsao were rich in a fish called "plachon" (in my German-Einglish dictionary I find "sneakhead fish" as its name) and that the bodies of the fish were very big, so they could cut it in eight thick stripes (or is layer the right English word?) when they made dried fish of it...

At the other side of the image you can find the word พระพุทธโสธร which is a name, possibly one of the many many names used for Lord Buddha. Here it is used as a name of the amulet series (they probalbly issued many different series, each series got a name of its own).

As for the back of the amulet the foto is unfortunately not too clear, I cannot decipher it...if you can provide a clearer foto I may be able to tell you more (but am not sure). The word ยันตร์ means "cabalistic writing".

@Lancashirelad: these amulets can be taken out of Thailand in any amount; they do not have any historical value, in fact they are produced to make money...
