Practicalities

First post here :-)

Just got my confirmatin that I am accepted into ramkhamhaeng university, so I am moving to Bangkok next february from Norway. Must say I am looking forward to the sun and the weather in Thailand in opposiion to Norway with 2- celsius and only light from 9-3. My question is: I am confused with the size of Bangkok, and cant quite figure out the district the university is located and how much I must expect to spend on an apartment close to it?

they are in bang kapi - a small apartment 5k

Ah, so it is near assumtion. That makes it much easier. Do you guys got any more practical advice for somebody that has never been to Thailand (other than my friends: "Watch out for the ladyboys and the police, which I assume is good advice, but maybe somebody can give me some more?).

The best advice that I can give is:

1. You can have a great time living in Thailand. However, like all foreign countries, it is different in many respects from whatever you are used to. You have to get used to Thailand, it will not change to suit you.

2. You can get into a lot of trouble in Thailand. Learn your way around, do not get drunk at any time (except maybe in the safety of your own digs), do not throw money around, do not insult anybody, be nice to the locals and they will be nice to you.

Yes ^^^

Also, DO NOT under any circumstances overstay your visa (I know, old chestnut).

Just interested, what will you be studying in BKK that a Norwegian uni. can't provide at a higher and more globally respected standard?

Light from 6 to 6 with only slight seasonal variations can get a little monotonous sometimes, made up for by it being warm all the time and the vast numbers of very cute university students :o

Let's see, 12 million plus people, ten million motorbikes, and a zillion cars.....you make want to bring some of that cool, refreshing Norwegian air with you! :o

Life experience and fun! (Oh and lots of cute girls).

OP, out of interest why did you pick Ramkamhaeng? What will you be studying?

Sounds great. Will study Master in Mass Communication. Its not really for the study i will go to Bangkok (there are similar studies in Norway), but mostly to experience a new culture and take benefit of the great stipends abroad-students get. And regarding temperature: http://joshshb.googlepages.com/norwegiansandtemperature
