I've just volunteered to SCAD which used to be Soi Dog Rescue. They are desperate for volunteers willing to do ANYTHING. Foster an animal, play with the animals, sponsor an animal, man the stands at the craft fairs (great fun), anyone with a car, give them your 'junk', raise funds, help out at the centre or the clinic, ANYTHING. If you love animals and are willing to help in any way, PLEASE let me know. I'm a full time mum and not long in Bangkok and it's really as much or as little as you can do.

U know, I'm a HUGE animal fan and I volunteered at a shelter in the US when I lived there... and when I first got to BKK I felt like I had to do something about all the stray animals. But honestly, after watching the ones that live around my condo now for several months... I think they have a pretty decent life, it's just not normal compared to house animals for sure, but they all look like they eat enough... they have friends and families they sleep with... I see people feeding them all the time... the only thing they don't have is medical care, but that's true of just about all animals that don't live in cages...

Just a thought :o

How can I apply, I have travelled many parts of Thailand and mollycoddled many stray animals but assume application would involve large airport costs from uk and accommodation costs perhaps

Please note I am 62 yrs old, female, a pensioner domiciled in UK who wishes to make Thailand her home but especially having no ties would

be firm and loving towards poor dumb animals.

There are many Thai who feed the strays and there are also several that will bring a needed dog to the vet for medical care. Again others volunteer at the several rescue organisations. Unfortunately, there are so many dogs (and cats) that there is still an enormous amount of them that are not as well of as the dogs near your condo, hence the many malnutrioned mange dogs, distemper or parvo sufferers, dogs with venereal diseases, road accident victims, etc.

the only thing they don't have is medical care, but that's true of just about all animals that don't live in cages...

I have to disagree with you here. There is an enormous misery going on under many of these dogs that live 24/7 in a cage. Very often the cages are too small for the dog, not cleaned on a regular basis, food is poor and forget about the medical care. Dogs that can't 'produce' anymore, show some sort of behavior problem, or the owner has lost interest end up in a cage away from human eye and completely neglected until death take its toll.

If you are interested to do some voluntary work for one of the rescue organisations, you will be confronted with this misery. One needs to have some thick skin to be able to handle this. It's not that I want to discourage anyone who is interested working directly with the animals at a rescue organisation, but it's definitely something that one needs to be aware of before volunteering.

Other options for voluntary work is given on the website mentioned in my former post.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply. I've been cooling off in Scotland and enjoying every minute of it! There are any number of things you can do to help aside from adopting a dog or cat. We're always on the hunt for volunteers to man the stalls at the craft fairs for a couple of hours or to play with the dogs at the adoption centre or to drive stuff around or to be in the shop etc etc. No end. You can do as much or as little as you like.

I'm not quite clear on what you were referring to with regard to airport/accommodation costs etc. Please feel free to email me anytime at [email protected]

Hiya,

I was under the same misapprehension when I first arrived. I used to describe to my friends abroad that there were so many stray dogs but they all seemed to be fat! However I'm wiser now. Illness and disease is rife in these dogs and one of our biggest drives at the moment is to teach about spaying and neutering. We are trying to get into all the schools and talking, talking, talking about it. They may LOOK fine, but trust me, a lot of them are not and we are just trying to do what we can. All help welcome in any form!
