Chiang Mai Questions - Help!

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am moving to Chiang Mai in May of 2008 with my boyfriend. My job situation is secure however I have some questions on behalf of my boyfriend...Can you help? He has a BA from a good US university and he will be taking the 4 week SEE TEFL course when we arrive. Here are my concerns/questions:

-How likely will it be that he can find a full time job?

-How likely is it that he will be offered a work permit/visa etc?

If he is not offered the work permit, does this mean that we will have to leave the country every 30 days, etc? How does that work? Can (or will) he get in trouble for working like this? Is doing that a really big hassle and/or expensive?

Does anyone out there live in Chiang Mai and have any suggestions? Thanks so much guys... :o

It is very likely he'll get a job with those qualifications, and SEE will try to help him get a job, even right there in Chiang Mai. Again, with those quals, there's a good chance he'll get a work permit and extended visa.

He should get a B visa, the longest duration he can get, preferably multi-entry from a friendly consulate in the USA. And, he should bring his criminal record check and original university diploma and sealed transcript.

The other method you mention (leaving country every 30 days, etc.) doesn't really work anymore. But he shouldn't have to do that.

Please have him contact SEE after he's secured his place in a class there.

Thanks so much for such a quick response!! :o I really appreciate it. So the documents necessary to bring to Thailand are: transcripts, original diploma, and criminal background check?

Yes

Very easy to get a job up in the north. You can PM me if you have any questions, might even be able to suggest a place to work. I believe my school is hiring.

If you have any points of contact, it might be a good idea to look for the job now. The new school year starts in May. The school should be able to assist your bf in getting his work visa before he gets to Thailand. If not, your bf will have to leave Thailand again to get a non-immigrit B visa. Post his resume now on the internet now so the school recruiters can start contacting him now.
