Rather Large Snake On Second Road

Sunday morning I was sitting with my friend at a restaurant on second road (opposite Mike's shopping Mall) when we heard 2 loud screams. We looked over to the other side of the road and saw a Song Taew (or Baht bus) and people crowding around. At first we thought they had hit a dog but then I just managed to see the tail end of a rather fat snake climbing up in the chassis of the car.

I must admit I was really surprised to see such a large snake in that area and it made me rather wary of walking around there.

Does anyone know what type of snake it was? I heard two men talking about a cobra but I'm not sure whether it was or not.

Have there been other reports of large snakes in Pattaya?

Anyone else seen one around town? Maybe this is the cause behind the many mystery heart attacks on the streets.

They seek it here they seek it there they seek that python everywhere....but there is only one place to look :o Say no more!

If I wanted wild animals I should go to the jungle?

As long as you live in Pattaya, you are already in a jungle. More like a trash jubgle, thinking about it.

How big was it, approximately? Cobra's tend not to grow to a huge size but pythons do and are common.

I didm't really see the whole snake. All I saw was about 1 meter from the tail end. It was quite fat so I guess it was a Python.

it was a phyton, and they are quite common so better watch your steps while lurking around the streets at night.

Are Pythons really that common in Pattaya?

While snakes tend to avoid the high-traffic areas of Pattaya, they are quite abundant (including pythons and cobras) in the more rural areas like Jomtien and east of Sukhumvit.

Sunday morning I was sitting with my friend at a restaurant on second road...

Being the featured headline item, there is a large full-color picture of the snake on the front page of the current (Friday, January 25, 2008) issue of Pattaya Mail, and true to form for accuracy in reporting in Pattaya media, there seems to be a contradiction between the photo and the article.

The article, on page three, says:

A 2.5-meter long python that had hidden itself under a baht bus parked in front of Mike Shopping Mall caused considerable excitement not to mention trafic chaos in the early hours of January 13.

Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Radio Center received a call just after midnight from a member of the public to say that the snake had slithered from Soi Diana across Pattaya Second Road where it had gone to ground under a baht bus parked there awaiting passengers.

Vehicles passing through the area had to be stopped to avoid an accident, and rescuers spent more than 30 minutes catching the python."

Hmmm. The picture on the front page of bystanders holding the python is broad daylight. Did it take considerably more than 30 minutes -- like many hours -- to catch the snake? Did they confine/restrain the python for 10-12 hours to afford the best possible lighting for its photo op? Or, is the timeline from the article totally wrong?

petedk, what time of day were you sitting with your friend in that restaurant on Second Road?

Get a life. Same old boring dribble from you.

Same same, as soon as there is a mention of a "big snake" you are in like a flash to post.

There is no need for abuse either in the forum or via PM. Desist :o

i was there, here are the pics, lots of excitment, took over half an hour to get him out,

I dunno. Still seems awfully bright for an incident that reportedly took place "in the early hours," "just after midnight." :o

Anyone ever had a Monocled cobra in his/her garden??

I live close to lake Mabrachan and had one of these in my garden.

Normally we throw the snakes that enter our garden back over the fence, but the gardener said it was a better idea to have this one killed.

The dog was barking for about a week and we didnt know why..

Well two days ago i found out.. It was a mean looking cobra ready to attack my dog!!

Didn't want to take any risks so it is better this way.

I was sitting in the restaurant at about 10.30 when I saw the snake crawl up into the bus.

There was no chaos or any stoppage of traffic. In fact many people walked by unaware of anything going on. All we could see was a number of Thais squatting and trying to look under the bus. One or two were trying to take photos with their mobile phones.

We then walked back to our hotel and checked out. We passed the bus at around 11.40 and there were still a group of people looking around and under the bus so my guess is that the snake was still there. The traffic flowed by as normal.

Having read the posts again I can only assume that

took over half an hour to get him out,
is probably the time it took the volunteers to get him out.

It may have taken them more than an hour to get there and during that time nothing much happened.
