Hi All

My wife and I live in Bangkok. We have bought 6 rose bushes, I have no idea what variety they are. We have put them in large pots and they seem quite happy.

When should we prune them and how hard back should we prune.

jaiyenyen, Most roses are normally deciduous, but not so here in the tropics, Main things to remember,is to dead head as soon as each flower dies, a light watering each morning, feed regularly with rose food (but sparingly).

The roses available mainly in Los are Tea variety ,not the standard rose that grows a single trunk about a metre high.

Tea roses are more bushy but tend to get very "leggy"in these conditions so instead of just removing the dead flower, take about six inches of stem as well ,this will encourage multiple shoots, then once a year ,probably as the weather cools about Xmas chop about 50% of their growth off.

In pots you can just prune to a height that you feel suits their placement, say 30-45 cm high, you can even shape them, you can be pretty ruthless as they are tough plants.

i have about 14 rose plants. some of them in pots and other in the ground. I have a problem with some insect biting the leafs and leaving holes in them. Any recommendation on pesticides to use?

Also what fertilizer is best for roses to have lots and lots of blooms? I currently use some light bluish stuff once every ten days. Not many flowers though !
