I am just wondering how the สังคายนา is used.

My dictionary says that it means; to revise, to correct, recital or rehersal.

I have seen it in the context of;

คำนี้ไม่ถูกสังคายนา

I guess that this means, 'this word is not a correct translation'.

Would that be correct?

Seems to be "monks" language & seems to mean something about re-organisation of items or can be used in everyday Thai in, for example, a staff meeting where you want to complain to each staff member individually.

ภาษาของพระ - pasa korng phra - monk's language

To tell the truth, I have not come accross this expression before & it was an interesting exercise getting a translation.

Cheers,

Soundman. :o

สังคายนา from Wikipedia

Apparently has to do with monks' chanting and/or the classification of Buddha's teachings into sections. But I have to admit I'm not a deeply religious person, so can't provide a comprehensive explanation of its use in Buddhist context. :D

However, the meaning in everyday usage as I've heard it means to go through (a great big mess of) things, and redo/organize it all over again. "Overhaul", basically.

As for the sentence คำนี้ไม่ถูกสังคายนา, I'm really not sure. It's likely one of our resident linguists here would have a better idea. :o

Normally it's used in religious terms: การสังคายนาพระไตรปิฏก (săng-kaai-naa prá dtrai bpì-dtòk) - the revision of Tipitaka (the Buddhist scriptures). Mahidol University has developed software for electronic sanghayana: BUDSIRI (BUDdhist Scriptures Information Revising Integrator) http://www.scisoc.or.th/stt/28/web/content/O_15/O07.htm

สังคายนา (sanghayana) is the convocation of the Sangha for enquiry, verification, revision in details of disciplines of the Sangha and Dhamma.

Sometimes we use it informally to imply the big task:

ได้เวลาสังคายนาบ้านซะที รกไปหมดแล้ว (dâai way-laa săng-kaai-naa bâan sá tee rók bpai mòt láew)

Time to clean up the house, so messy.
