Room Safe stolen from Hotel room occupied by 19 Year Old English Tourist.

Police were called to a room at the Baboona Hotel located on Pattaya Beach Road between Soi’s 3 and 4 on Wednesday Night after a guest of the Hotel reported a robbery. Police were met by Mr. Jonathan Erash aged 19 from England. He led Police to a wardrobe inside the room which used to contain a room safe which had apparently been stolen along with the contents which included a mobile phone, a digital camera, and 25,000 Baht in cash. He had just returned from Walking Street and realized his 2nd floor room had been broken into. The point of entry was the balcony door which had not been locked by the victim prior to him leaving the room earlier that night. Police are investigating.

Now that is a fairly new one, taking the whole safe rather than breaking into it I suppose. Poor lad probably saved hard for this trip but only 2nd floor & not locked the window, bet he is feeling a bit silly today!!

And why people always keep those rather high amounts of cash? Saving ATM fees....what the heck!

I certainly would not leave 25,000 Baht in a room, safe or not.

No, it certainly doesn't look like a cheap place. I think some people routinely go from door

to door in some of these hotels checking to see if guests forgot to lock the door. Not much

of a room safe if it's not anchored to the floor. This is becoming a daily event in this place. :o

Nor that heavy either - seems to be an inside job of sorts. Bit hard to conceal one of those - mind you if more a service apt, prob won't have the same amenities in a regular hotel. Desk Staff and round clock security. :o

Room safes aren't safe. They offer only a tiny bit more security than leaving your valuables in an unlocked desk drawer.

With honest hotel staff, security boxes at the reception desk offer the best alternative....but again, it is not wise to use this facility to hold large amounts of money or jewelery.

Particaly when it appears from the photos that it was not fitted correctley, note there is no sign of damage when the safe was removed.

I have knowledge of safes that the company I work for supply to hotels, They can be configured for up to 5 means of entry; Guests own code, Maid/House keeping code for when guests vacate leaving the safe locked, a mangers code for changing maids code, a master code and an override key if the batteries or electronics fail.

You may think this is poor security but the safes can provide an audit trail of time & what code (or key) were used to open the safe, that meant that it could be proved if unauthorized entry Had been made, it also protect the hotel from fraudulent claims and the best selling point is that the safe are designed to accommodate a laptop if required.

It is really up to the hotel and geest to prevent the thief getting into the room in the first place, as for security boxes, what I have seen in most hotels in Thailand is pretty poor, also they are not watched all the time, the best I have seen was like a banks safety deposit box, two keys, you had to escorted in the room, and to most of us this system is pretty inconvenient.

Check out that young cats body language. All defensive with the cops and strutting himself with the guard :o . And the wee hookers in the background.

Wait till his ma finds out what he's been up to! Alone in Pattaya, 19 years old, a few failed street walker / massage parlour sqeezes and ends up in the belly of the beast.

Google his name and the only thing that the whole net has to show is this thread......... I bet he's well pissed off.

Young man, Im gonna tell your mum

I wonder if this safe ever made it out of the building. They might want to check the maids closet and other storage areas. Likely that someone on the in side either did it, or cooperated. A little hard to walk out holding a room safe. Even in Thailand this would likely attract some attention.

Think of the overwhelming positive though. He probably will surf the net, discover TV forum and become another just another newbie Pattaya basher.

My thoughts too. A little harder too for them to be taking the safe out over the second floor balcony.

Common knowledge, quite often thieves will break in through a window but they are more than likely to exit by a door.

Yes ... but not with a room safe in their pocket.

Naka.
