Police tighten security around foreign companies in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Police have increased security around foreign embassies, hotels, banks and companies in Thailand.

They are also closely monitoring all places associated with foreign interests.

The tightened security is aimed at preventing any possible terrorist attacks.

Before the anniversary of 11 September 2001, road blocks were put up on the streets near foreign owned buildings, and suspicious vehicles stopped and searched, a police spokesman, Pol. Col. Panurat Meepian told TNA on Sunday.

Extra security guards have been provided at the US, British, Australian, Israeli and Iraqi embassies, and a number of foreign companies, he said.

Places popular with foreigners, like churches, business centres and places of entertainment have also been put under heavy scrutiny to prevent possible terrorist attacks.

The expanded police security and surveillance operations will continue for some time until the level of risk is consider lower than at the moment, Col. Panurat said.
