Well she just left my place after a pretty wild night.<br /><br />The value of Thai gold has just gone way up. A long time ago we bought some Thai gold, 18ct we were told. Later my wife happened to get a job in the jewlery industry in New York and, just for fun, we had the gold assayed. It turns out that our 18ct gold chain was really 9ct.

So...if you are looking for investment then Thai gold probably is not what you should be buying. Real investers would probably buy gold coins, Kugarrands, US Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs. They don't wear them around their necks. They hide them away in a safty deposit dox. An investment in gold is only so good as how quickly you can become liquid. Wih gold coins that is basically immediately. With gold jewlery you would find it much harder. And with Thai gold you might not find a buyer at all.

Now someone has to be right, or as usual the answer lays between the two.

Wearing gold is nothing to do with status.

It is simply a portable way of saving.

If you need to realise the cash, you loose very little on the deal,

as opposed to other possessions which loose value the moment you buy them.

Remember many of the Thai people migrated from China less than 100 years ago.

Another part of that migrant culture is the question, "Have you eaten?"

With the current rises in the gold price it represents a very good investment

Often folks in Thailand with some cash would never been seen loaded up with a big gold chain or bracelet.

If you see someone wearing gold and driving a black pick-up truck, you can assume their lowly class.

You can take the man out the council house but you can't take the council house out the man.

Or if u see someone whinging about wearing gold, normally its because they can't afford it.

That's what happened to one of the poster here recently.

When the poster tired to sell his/her 18k jewelry to one of the gold shop where a full case of 18k were displayed. for sale The shop owner just tell him/her simple as that ....nobody buys this kind of gold jewelry.

Most Thais know that if you buy gold as an investment or can get an instant cash (long before ATM era), they have to deal with only 100% (24K)gold. With that you can walk into ANY gold shop around the country, walk out with cash in less than 5mn.

My gold chains all bear 100% stampped on (Mother bought over 45 yr. from Seng-Heng-Lee, the one with the crown-trademark).

If my information is correct then I'd hazard that most Thais lose money on gold. Why ? because what they are getting is not what they are paying for.

It is my understanding that the gold in jewellery form is say 95% but they are paying the 100% price plus workmanship and when they sell they think they will get the 100% price but in fact get less than the 95% price. I've even seen a shop try to charge for workmanship when they were saying they were going to smelt it !

So with gold at say Bt10k per baht, you'd pay 10k (when you should perhaps pay 9500) +0.5k work and then get back 9k. So just to break even, you'd have to see the price of gold rise about 17%.

Every time you sell gold, you lose out as the worksmanship is not factored into the buying back price, as it was in the price that you bought it at.

Also much easier to sell back to the shop you bought it from (usually at a loss, of course)

What you said is true.

It's a mandate for gold shops to post the prices of gold infront of their shops daily: Sale - Buy.

Like any kind of business, to be able to make profits, the 'sale' price always higer than the 'buy' price. When you buy gold jewelries, you're paying more on the gold weight plus the workmanship. But when you sale, the shops pay for the gold only, not the workmanship.

Do you know 100% gold band, Thais call ' waen ga', if the same weight as gold chain, the gold band can fetch a better price than the chain since the shops don't pay for the workmanship.

In those days, Thai elders used to hoard up gold bands (waen ga) since it easily turn into cash anytime.

Aside from my wedding band, I'll stick with my little piece of string on my wrist.

Just wanted to add to this post..... My current Ex Girlfriend would only wear her gold neckless, bracelet, rings, only when we went to bars or restaurants, when we went out in a group/family... Other then that, she kept it locked up.. secured in her purse... she kills me.. She's not well off, back in her home village, she lives in a bamboo house..
