Studying english?

Featured Replies

there – their – they’re (all pronounced the same)

None of us like to make mistakes – right? So …

For the benefit of members who are Studying English, or who use English as a Second Language (and who might assume  that the English in the Posts on this Forum are in Good English) – well the use of

there – their – they’re

is often wrong – either through laziness or ignorance.

“their” shows Possession –  they placed their books on the table

“there” refers to a place – your book is on the table over there

“they’re” = “they are”  - they’re running because they’re late

Roger, why am I reading this? Maybe you'd like to write your own book of English instruction.

If so, this is not the place for it.

Dear Roger, I know that you are kind and have good intentions. However, I wish to say that this is not the proper forum to teach or learn English. We have urgent and serious matters to discuss. Nonetheless, I respect your good intentions. Wishing you all the best.
