I was on Sukhumvit on the same side heading south when it happened. I was wondering what the traffic jam was! The bloke is very lucky.

I was heading South also............traffic was gridlocked.

The guy looked as though he was heading North and somehow had come across the central reservation and flipped it over onto its roof...........cant understand it as the road is straight ... :D

Mickey "the hammer" was there doing his ambulance attendant bit attending to the french guy. :o

(Edit no other vehicle appeared to be involved)

uh oh!!!!!!! definitely a write off too.

takes more than that to write off a car in this country , it'll be looking brand new and for sale again by next week.

tax, that is spot on especially if all of the parts required are available in Thailand...

its a testament to the strength of the car that the A-pillars (the windscreen frame) didnt buckle too much , and that the driver escaped relatively unhurt , after "repairs" and resale , the next driver to turn it over or crash wont be so lucky when the already weakened structure folds like paper.

A few years ago I was first on the scene of a car sitting on its roof on a motorway. Driver said something blew across the road and he braked. The something turned out to be a plastic bag. So seems turning a car over is easily done.

As others have said, not a new car but running with red plates - wheel arches and underside look well used and weathered. Is there more to this story ?

If the car did cross the divider by itself, no other cars involved I would wonder if the car has been in an accident before?

Maybe a massive steering / mechanical failure, like having a ball joint or tie-rod come apart, and the front tires suddenly both point inward (or outward) ? Loss of control and a catastrophic collision would definitely be the result.

Otherwise, I don't get it either. Even if that "ultimate driving machine" is a few years old, it would have ABS, allowing the most possible control of a well engineered performance car in a panic situation.

In absence of a mechanical fault, what other possible reason could cause a sober / awake / alert driver to leave a straight piece of roadway in a single vehicle accident? Gotta be a driver error...........

What an idiot. Anyone who rolls a BMW has no one to blame but himself.

So why's that? Presumably you have some special knowledge on BMWs this would you care to elucidate?

What about other vehicles? Do you have any pronouncements on them?

E. G. Is it OK to roll a Camry or a Civic then?

What you are describing is a reality version of the now famous "Moose test"......in fact it's really really hard to roll an ordinary car these days as the centre of gravity is that low....you really have to try hard or be very unlucky....e.g. if the vehicle goes into a slide it usually has to strike an obstacle to make it roll otherwise it just keeps sliding. The Moose test is an elliptical swerve that is designed to take the car beyond this limit.

This is what I call inexpensive: I paid £50 for a Toyota Celica in 1990 it had passed a BFG the equivalent of an passing an MOT in Germany for the British Forces. Even the Air Conditioning worked! I gave it away when my tour ended. :o

It's a credit to the crumble zones, inner shell and just normal car construction today....a pickup on the other hand, ..........

If the car has been fitted with much wider than standard alloy wheels then it is possible.

Ok hawkeye... anyone else miss the bent rim in one of the shots?

Too fast.... V1... driving for ever-diminishing gap... motorcy/dog/pickup suddenly in way.... swerve.... brake.... skid... arse-sideways... clip kerb.... V2.... rotate!

Did it myself with my old Dodge 4x4 in Houston but the power pole interrupted my flight.

rolled my Vigo last night on 304 about 20km west of Kabin Buri. Was doing about 100-110 and must gave fallen asleep for a few seconds. Woke up just as the car went into an unrecoverable skid, then it rolled. No idea how many times, probably just once. Ended up "parked" in the motorcycle lane on the other side of the road. Not a straight panel on the whole car, a write-off. Lucky for me and others there was no oncoming traffic. Incredibly I walked away without a scratch, but a bit of a sore head probably from lowering the roof line. Sleeping and driving definitely don't go together. Won't be thinking it can't happen to me any more. All over in a few seconds and no warning.

My next car will be a Vigo for sure. Going to the temple tomorrow.
