Buying A Car

Featured Replies

My girlfriend and I are buying a car, we have several options:

A) Buy a new car (in her name or my name).

B) Buy a used car (in her name or my name).

C) Buy a car overseas and have it shipped here (in her name or my name).

There are positives and negatives to each. Could those of you who have bought cars before post about your experiences? Which is the best option in your opinion?

New cars seem to be getting cheaper recently, but that tax seems to be a real pain in the ass (as a foreigner, would I get taxed more or less?).

Old cars seem to be ridiculously expensive (for example, someone wanted 400,000 baht for a '96 Honda Civic!). That's good for the owner, as it means that the car will retain it's value, but I guess I'm used to the American market where cheap--but reasonably good quality--cars could be had for less than $5,000. Where do all the cheap cars go in Thailand?

Buying a used car overseas and having it shipped here is another option. But I'm wondering if we'll still get hit with a huge tax bill. Anyone have an idea where to find more info on that?

Try this link for vehicles at Thai prices, :D not Farang prices :o
