Important DTV Announcement - Application restrictions Sep 2026

Featured Replies

There is an important change happening with the DTV effective August 31st (I put September in the title because it's easier). DTV applicants will only be able to apply through the Thai embassy in their home country or a country they have permanent residence in.

People will not be able to travel to Laos or Vietnam, or any other third country, in order to apply for the DTV.

In addition, a police clearance/criminal records check must be included as part of all DTV applications.

This has been announced by both the Thai embassies in Vientiane, and Dhaka. In addition, the E-visa portal is going down for maintenance the entire day of August 30th, so it looks like this is going to be a universal change that they are implementing on that date. When the portal returns on the 31st, the new regulation will be in effect for DTV.

Only 4 days notice of the change, that will catch a lot of people out.

Bit off topic but perhaps first step to reign in this questionable visa option.

Im set to apply in vietnam sep 2. Will try and see how it goes.

Ho-hum, I'm on a 9-month ED visa right now, gives me time to save up the 500k for the DTV. Looks like if I want to apply, then I'll be making a trip back to ol' Blighty...... (f***!!!)

Many reports of people being denied immediately in Vietnam for the last 1-2 weeks if they're not a resident. Seems like they started implementing this early there.

Yes, I have an LTR but not on a DTV. I never really understood the DTV - it seemed more restrictive than it was worth. Did they ever sort out the issue of opening a Thai bank account?

Like you say, maybe they plan to ditch it entirely.

Please report back outcome.

You can pay online so what is expected process time? 5-10?
