Uk Shaken By Biggest Quake Since 1984

Featured Replies

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale has been felt across the UK.

The epicentre was five miles east of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, and about 15 miles south west of Grimsby.

It was the UK's largest since 1984, when an earthquake measuring 5.4 shook the Lleyn Peninsula of north Wales.

Seismologist Brian Baptie of the British Geological Survey (BGS) said: "This is a significant earthquake for the UK and will have been widely felt across England and Wales."

Residents have reported being woken from their sleep by the tremor, which struck at around 1am.

Some damage has been caused to buildings, and a man from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, required hospital treatment after a chimney collapsed and fell into his bedroom.

Emergency services received a high level of calls following the incident, many from people who were frightened when they were woken up to find their home shaking.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We had an emergency call to Wombwell, Barnsley. A chimney had come through the bedroom roof."

A Lincolnshire Police spokeswoman said the force took dozens of calls from concerned residents but had no reports of anyone being injured.

"It made us very, very busy for about an hour," she said.

Just wondering how long until this topic is closed. Hardly Thailand-related, is it?

Was it a Norwegian blue? Pining for the fjords?

I have been through over 200 earthquakes living in Northern California - including the 880 highway collapse. Sonoma only got a 4.7 then. But It is a very good thing That we are not Prone to Earthquakes here in Pattaya area. with as poorly (structurally built & predominately on sand-near the ocean)How hideous a situation would be! The people in England would shit a brick living in Sanfrancisco!

Quick Question:

Does England lie over or near a subduction zone fault?

I presume it must be subduction.

Its hardly the first earthquake the UK has seen in recent history. For your reading pleasure:

History of recent Earthquakes in the UK

And you are right, it isn't Thailand related in any way. Sorry guys :o
