Jakrapob says overhaul of Channel 11 will not affect its personnel

BANGKOK: -- PM's Office Minister Jakrapob said Monday that outsiders may be brought in to help improve Channel 11 but the overhaul would not affect its current personnel.

He said the overhaul would require experience of current staff coupled with creativity and mobility of outsiders.

He said he would have the acting director-general of the Public Relations Department brainstorm opinions of current staff of the TV station how to improve its programmes.

You mean like the overhaul of ITV when it was taken over?

Bangkok Post

iTV reporters sacked five years ago plan to file a lawsuit against the station for alleged deprivation of job security. Sakoldet Silapong, former iTV labour union executive, said the reporters were discussing the possibility of legal action against the broadcaster to protect their employees' rights over their unfair dismissal in 2001.

The reporters, many of whom are still working as broadcast journalists, won a court battle against the station and obtained compensation.

Although the court ordered the station to re-employ them, none have so far been taken back.

Some reportedly claimed that compensation was underpaid, while others were compelled to take up odd jobs without work security.

The iTV management dismissed the 21 reporters on Feb 7, 2001. Seven of them were sacked for allegedly issuing a statement about political interference in the station, which damaged its reputation.

Thirteen of them were dismissed as part of a company restructuring, while one was given the boot for insubordination.
