TAT unveils new tourism plans for Pattaya

CHONBURI: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) today unveiled new tourism plans for the well-known resort of Pattaya, turning its proximity to the new Suvarnabhumi Airport into its main selling point, while preparing for the establishment of a special call centre for Pattaya tourist information.

Mr. Niti Khongkrut, Director of the TAT's Central Region Office, Region 3, said that the plans for the 2005 fiscal year had been drawn up in conjunction with local tourism organizations.

Expressing pleasure that the Pattaya authorities had approved a Bt10 million publicity budget for the TAT's Pattaya office to spend on publicity, he said that this amount would be matched by the same sum from the TAT itself.

As far as foreign publicity is concerned, the TAT will concentrate on the Asian market, especially China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, with publicity conducted via television, newspapers, billboards and advertising on buses and trains.

The focus of the campaign will be on the convenience of travel to Pattaya, with a mere one-hour journey time between Pattaya and Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport, due to open in September next year.

On the domestic front, the TAT will turn to visitors from Bangkok, both independent tourists and conference guests.

Mr. Niti also revealed that the TAT was establishing a tourist information call centre for Pattaya, with visitors being able to gain tourist information by dialling 1555.

The only upside I see is shorter travel time to Pattaya when arriving from your home country. The massive downside is that even more tourists will descend on Pattaya. The infrastructure is not coping with number of tourists now, what will it be like when the numbers double or triple? Pattaya is in for some serious growing pains in the next few years.

Traffic is congested everyday of the week now, not only on the weekends. Pattaya is looking more and more like a mini Bangkok. Makes you wonder what the Bangkok residents enjoy about leaving the big city to be stuck in traffic on the weekends as well.

The location for the new airport will be really convenient, however the thought of more busloads of Chinese tourists with their matching pink towels being herded around like a flock of sheep, is worrying! :o

One unanswered question: what will this make Pattaya the hub of? :o

A further bit of lunacy here, is the way they are widening the Sukhumvit Road between Chonburi and Pattaya to six lanes.

This road passes through many little towns and villages, whilst the parallel "Bypass" road has 4 lanes only and is choked with lorries, particularly on the hill up to the Tiger Zoo.

It would make a lot more sense to widen the bypass and keep the traffic away from the urban areas.

Ah well.
