Try Spinrite first.

http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm

It can recover files and repair drives in a jiffy.

Nope, thanks tho. the drive has to be either repaired or the platters taken out to repair, the circuit board was fried

Been through this recently with a friends laptop hardrive that failed.

There are no local recovery cleanroom labs. All the local companies are fronts/agents for Singapore or US operations, they will charge you an "appraisal fee" and then pass it on. Costs from $500US-$2000US + shipping depending on the amount of data to be recovered.

No guarantee you will get anything back.

Ok, thanks for all the advice all. what I may do is purchase a duplicate HD and swap out the power PCB on the bottom. that should do it. since its still under warrenty i'll just send the now broken one back to repair.
