I have upgraded from AVG 7.5 free to AVG 8 Free, and could not understand why "Update Manager" was "Disabled", no matter how many times I tried to activate it.

They have now posted an FAQ on http://free1.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1303#faq_1303

which says:

I do not understand what you call "Update Manager"

In my case the virus database is updated daily, at computer startup. No problem.

You can modify update options in Tools/Advance Settings/Schedules/...
