I believe, I don't use Gmail, that you need to add an application from Google called Gmail notifier. When installing it there's an option to make Gmail your default mail client.

Isn`t there something like setting default programs??. In vista there is, very easy.

cannot remember if xp had something like that.

^ that depends on how you're accessing Gmail, e.g. IMAP. There are programs out there to add GMail as a defined 'default' since I don't believe it ships with Windows, though the hooks for 'live' do.

PS In Firefox 3 the mailto: function can be amended

You have two easy options:

1) Use Gmail notifier like A_Traveller recommend and use the option to compose internet mailto: links in gmail. This method will work for firefox or IE, and of course you're notified when you get new email.

2) If you use firefox, i would recommend using the "Better Gmail 2" extension. This will also force mailto: links to use gmail but has a whole slew of additional options as well, like forcing gmail to use https connections and removing some of the cllutter in gmail.

Maybe this can fix it?:

Instead of running Outlook, you want it to run IE or Firefox and go to Gmail?

Not sure how to make your browser go to Gmail - but at least it should start instead of Outlook if you change this setting in Internet properties.

I was interested in that, too, installed it now, tried it and it works beautifully.

I guess the OP wants to use web mail interface but I just use Outlook to send/receive Gmail so opening Outlook is what I want.
