PLEASE! I'm trying to find somewhere in Bangkok where Goths hang out. The only place I can find is the Rock Pub. Is there any where for Goths, you know bit of Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, The Damned etc.

I'm dying out here (yes, I know, thats whats Goths are supposed to do!)

Even if the answer is "No there isn't anywhere" I just want to know!

Cheers me dears  ???

Yes, this would indeed be useful information. I could then file them under "Places To Avoid" because they're full of pretentious hairy-legged <deleted> in black dresses with studded leather collars. Hope you find what I'm not looking for.

Hi Kittycat - don't let them bully you.

I don't really think Goth caught on in LOS like it did in Japan. I think Thais just want to have fun and be vibrant (sanuk), dressing in black, wearing make up to resemble a zombie etc just isn't them. I don't know anywhere at all.

Sorry, think you might not find the answer you are looking for.

Sorry, Chonabot, you're right -- that was a bit harsh. But as I have a teenage daughter who's being drawn into this world, you might understand my concern. Do a google search for "goths+warning", and you'll see what I mean. Most people drawn to this phenomenon are only pretentious poseurs, but there is a dark side to it. I wouldn't be very happy if my daughter was to met up with those who explore the deeper meanings. I equate it with the Moonies, Hare Krishana and those types of people who brainwash your kids. Kittycat, you might be just one of the harmless ones involved in this movement, but the tenor of your post doesn't give me a lot of confidence. Sorry, but I hope you get lost quickly.

Cor blimey! Opened a can of worms there didn't I? Or are you guys always so harsh and unwelcoming? I'm assuming the guy with the fear of "The Dark Side Of Goth" (and you call US pretentious?) is a Westerner? Thats why I left, lovely people like you making value judgements on people they don't know at all because of a couple of articles in some trashy journal.

I'm just a new girl in town, who likes a certain kind of music, dresses a certain way i.e. black, don't wear a lot of make up or kill dogs, take drugs, shit on strangers from a great height (as do you) who wanted to know if there was any chance of finding like minded people.

Screw you. :o

Kittycat's claws have come out. Sheath them heathen bitch, or I shall pull out my multi-purpose Swiss army knife and declaw thee. LOL. Hey, listen, Kittycat, get your shit together, all right? You want to walk around in dark, brooding clothes and offer up flights of fantasy to strange Gothic forebears because it suits your grim personality, fine. But I have a right to say that people like you are off the beaten track. When my daughter comes home talking of meeting with her Gothic-inspired friends and dallying with ouija boards and the occult and so on, then I have a right to be concerned. I realise that this is abnormal for most Goth fetishists, but the fact that it is her older Goth-inspired friends who are using peer pressure to get her into this, then I think it bears a bit of apprehension on my part-- and well deserved, in my opinion. You personally might be harmless and just aspire to meeting like-minded people (and don't kill dogs or take drugs), but if you were honest with yourself you would know that you don't exactly inspire a lot of confidence in people. Go back to England. I came here to get away from people like you.

To 'Dexlowe' : It is really annoying to see sentences like "Go back to England. I came here to get away from people like you"

This 'kittycat' person has every right to be in this country like you do and she has every right o enjoy her favorite type of music and favorite style of hanging out at night.

Why don't we show tolerance and acceptance ?

And...once more, I want to say that it is really annoying to see people telling others to go away from one country (in this case, Thailand) just because that person's 'style' is different. Me personally, I don't "enjoy" seeing some foreigners touching and playing with the legs, etc of bargirls in open view of streetside passerbys but I accept and tolerate them and feel that they have every right to be here, like I do. By the way, don't get me wrong.....I don't mean to imply that I think you do such an act......I am just giving an example to make my point.

'Kittycat' : Sorry...I don't know any type of 'Gothist hangout place'. I doubt very much that there is one in Bangkok but keep on asking around.

Regards to all,

Jem

Jem, you're perfectly right about tolerance and I agree with you 100%, but don't forget that it was Kittycat who made the comment of "getting away from people like you" in the first place -- OK, she feels she's hard done by back home because of people who will not accept her particular lifestyle, but she chose to live on the fringes of society, not I, and she has chosen a lifestyle that has connotations of the dark side of human nature, whether that be true or not. Whether she can accept it or not, but she carries a certain "baggage", and it's a hard one for parents like myself to come to terms with. I hope you understand that point, because you seem to have overlooked it.

hey goth girl - i like goth girls i think they are hot!  there is a big heavy metal scene, i would start there in your search.

i think some people might be suprised how dark some of the thai teens feel inside.

read the book 'pan maa baa' (crazy dog company) about modern thai youth.  available un english.

KittyCat :

i don't think 'GOTH' ever exists in T-land, so far i have never seen anyone dresses up like genuine gothic - not normally to find out among Thai teenies. Mostly Thais, as i've known so far who wear in black, are those who are Heavy/Death Metal (or any so-called) fans. i just wonder if they ever play 'The Cure' in Rock Pub - never been there :o

sorry that i can't help,

Girlfrombar.

i've been looking so long at these pictures of u and i almost believed that they're real

i've been living so long with my pictures of u and i almost believed that's the pictures all of i can feel..

- pictures of u, The Cure.

*To 'Samuisam': You wrote that there is a big heavy metal scene...I have lived here for several years but don't know of such 'big' scene....I am not into heavy metal but just curious....where are the heavy metal hang-out places in town ?

*To 'Dexlowe' : Okay...I saw that she had earlier made a remark about getting away from her country because of people with attitudes like you but also saw that that was in response to your earlier post which I thought was also quite harsh....You had written 'Sorry but I hope you get lost quickly' at the end of that post of yours.

Anyway...sorry for being heavily on 'kittycat' s side on this issue...I am just judging it as a neutral party from outside.

By the way, heavy/death, Goth metal are not the types of music I am into.

Regards,

Jem

Hi Girlfrombar -- Could you change your print setting? Your post was hard to read. Thanks.

I like hard rock and heavy metal. Not that familiar with death and goth, but would like to check out the scene when in Bangkok. Would be a nice change of pace, so where is the scene?

i've read 'Pan MA BAA' and i'm a big fan of (naah) Chart Korbjitti, thus i ever introduced my farang friends about the book as well and they do like a lot - MAD DOG & CO.

the story is classic for those who were growing up in the 70-80's scene, even though i was a bit too young for that period. It reminds me well about the pre and post generations of hippy movement, Thai politics era, pop culture.. etc.

thanks to my daddy, when he drove me to school and had the music of Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Caraboa.. etc., in the background from home to school everyday.

Even if, my taste in music sense was changing and changing from rock to metal to soul to disco to pop to jazz to... etc.

and during in pre 90's to mid 90's i was trying to dress up like gothic (:o) to express my feelings inside.. dark, dull and depression. i devoted Robert Smiths, Manic Street Preachers, Depeche Mode, Jeff Buckley, Nina Simone, Thomas More... etc.

anyway the world still circling, time still non-ending,

just holding on what u are faith for.

Happy to all MaMas who ever exist on this earth!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi again, see can't scare me off that easily!

Thanks for the defence guys, feeling a little vulnerable, you know, new town, bit of a weirdo at the best of times etc!

I don't know about any "big scene" here, but I've discovered the Rock Pub opposite Asia Hotel (BTS Ratchatewi) they've got some good cover bands on: Animal Planet - 20somethings playing Red Hot CP, Cold play, Linkin Park, etc. Really pretty good and very energetic. And there's Monson Friday and Sat nights playing Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Deep Purple etc Excellent band, singings a bit iffy, but they are very friendly too, came over and sat with me and my mate second time we went to watch them.

Theres also the Metal Zone in Langsuan, but haven't ventured there yet, anyone been? Any good?

Hi kittykat, glad your finding your niche, but beware the cute long haired thaiman musicians. ha ha ha :o

Have fun & I hope you meet other likeminded folks along the way. Used to be a goth myself, many moons ago but couldn't keep up with dying my blonde hair black but I still go with the pale & interesting look (more a fear of skin melanoma than fashion these days though!)

Choke dee

Kittykat,

I consider myself to be a 'goth' also, but all this "why do people judge us? just let us be different, wah wah wah!' junk is for kids. Just be yourself and stop trying to get attention by making out you are so different. If you are mature enough to be an expat you are mature enough to be yourself without trying to get noticed.

Hey JemJem - guess I never really explored the Metal scene in Thailand - just saw lots of long haired guys with metal t-shirts playing it at home.  The Rock Pub in Koh Samui used to have a a world class band till they asked for a raise.

Good THAI rock  -

Kung Pi (RULES)

Carabao

and uh...

i think...

Caraboa is classiflied as 'Pleng peur Chevit' (music for life) anyway their melody/tunes are various kinds of Bob Dylan, Santana, sometimes G&R!! ..etc.

but who cares what style of music is, as long as it makes good rhythm to listeners :o

come on and move ur hips!

KITTYCAT - I've recently discovered a couple of specialist record shops, the owners or customers of which may be able to give some advice.  There are definitely goths somewhere becuase I saw a group of thai goths crossing the road.  I also used to know a few punks but i don't know where they've disappeared to.   If you want to know more please feel free to PM me. :o

JEMJEM - the heavy metal scene is definitely hidden away but it's definitely there.  I recently saw a poster advertising a huge death metal event on Ratchadaphisek.

Kittycat,

I would be interested in knowing what you find...

Subcultures are what makes western culture so interesting. A western subculture in a new culture... now that's really interesting!

I would also like to find a rock-a-billy scene and go swing dancing.

Most importantly I want to find a MOD English, Manchester indie music scene? I'm sure it goes with the Vespa subculture...

I used to be a goth, I created a web site to sell shoes to Goths if you're interested VixensandAngels.com. Not just Goth but that style and more is included. We won't ship to LOS but...

As for parents of Goth children... Don't worry. All the goths I knew were that way because they were wicked smart and couldn't figure out normal boring society. They all turned out to be the true contributers to their communities and were good adults. you should be proud of her abilities to be different. You must be different to be a leader.

As for keeping you goth in LOS... I'm not sure... Without a scene you will be an outsider of outsiders. I'm sure you knew that before departing. Just be respectful of their culture as I'm sure you are... You might get some sun on your white skin!!!
