Mobile Sim Card Registration

Featured Replies

I remember, a year or so ago, maybe more, you had to start to register your telephone SIM card with your name, address, etc. with the phone company or they would turn it off after some time. Not just month-to-month billed numbers, but also top-up numbers. Are the mobile companies still requiring that? My wife has a top-up number on a 2nd mobile that she never had to register anywhere. She just bought the SIM and it has worked ever since. I remember this was a huge discussion a while back because the government was concerned that mobile phones were used as detonators by some people in the south to detonate bombs remotely.

It just came to my mind again and wondered what happened with that.

Decided it was too much of a pain in the arse and dropped the program!

That's what I thought. Probably thousands of people calling and wondering why their mobile phone number didn't work anymore. :o

I believe SIM registration was compulsory only in the Southern provinces.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

The procedure is still listed on the providers web sites but it never became a requirement outside the South so most do not seem to bother.
