You may not think this is thai language related but really it is;

I am having problems with my home phone (land line). When I pick up the handset and listen there is a lot of static over the dial tone, I think this is why my internet connection is dropping 20-30 times a day.

I want to explain the problem to TOT but...

I don't know what words to use for "dial tone", "static" or "loose wire".

So far I've worked out that dial tone might be described as; เสียงต่อสาย - (siang-dtor-sai) or; sound-connect-line. For static someone said; คลื่นรบกวน - (khleuun-rop-guan) wave-irritate, but I don't know about this one.

I am at a total loss to figure out the words for loose wire or loose connection, as there's too many words for loose, loosen, etc, and I don't know which one is correct when referring to something previously connected but now possibly loosened.

Of course I can always just say home phone broken; โทรศัพท์บ้านเสีย but I'd like to give them at least an idea of the problem as well.

Sorry for the inane nature of this post but I've never needed to know these words before.

As always any help is appreciated....

i faced the problem once and i told them that.. โทรศัพท์ไม่ดี มีเสียงรบกวน ต่อ internet แล้ว สายหลุดบ่อย

สาย(โทรศัพท์) หลุดบ่อย means often lose the connection

although there is no problem about the phone line but when connecting to the internet it always got cut

I had a similar problem and when repair guys were here I did sign language and took a piece of paper and crinkled it up near his ear. I then had my wife tell him that if he could fix the noise problem so internet worked good I would give him baht 1000. He showed up with 2 telephone repair guys on his day off and for sure fixed the problem. They ended up finding the best line at the connection hut and switching my line to that connect and it was just great.

The fix lasted about 2 months until someone decided to cut the 6 lines leading to our village and selling the stolen line to scrap.

It is now two years later and TOT still has not replaced the lines and what they tell us is that if they put new lines in someone will just steal them again so they have no plans to reinstall the stolen lines.

There is no concern on their part of something that most of us expect called customer service, so all I can do is offer the above and let you know that even a good fix is only temporary.

I do wish you good luck.

it's TOT responsibility ... u def. can blame them for that

they gotta find out the way it wnt be stolen again... not to give up installing :S !!

This morning when the TOT repair guy showed up, I could see the whites of his eyes and feel the apprehension as he saw the giant foreigner facing him at the door. Surprisingly, once he realized I was able to tell him about the problem and could speak more than "two-word-thai", we chatted the better part of the hour he was here fixing the line.

He even took me up on the roof, showed me how the caulk had dried out and water had gotten in the pipe housing the lines, causing condensation at the phone jack in my apartment. I had a tube of caulk so he repaired that too. He cut, stripped, reconnected the wires and now the line is crystal clear.

In this instance, I believe 100% it was my ability to converse with him in coherent thai which made the difference between the success I had and the failure I could have had in getting the problem resolved.

"thithi": THANX for the language help...

(edited to say thanx)
