This web site (mentioned above) does have some errors.

White background & green letters = Two door pick up. (Lower road tax as it considered for agricultural use.)

White background & black letters = Car or four door pick up.

White background & blue letters = Personnel transport vehicle for commerical use. (Higher road tax.)

If you have a large family and buy a type of mini van that is registered for commerical use with the 'white/blue' plates, you can get this changed and the vehicle registered for your sole domestic use only, and so pay a lower road tax rate with the 'white/black' plates fitted.

I had a friendly highway cop explain all the types to me a few years ago.

Amoung the other plates most commonly seen are:

Red background & black letters = Dealers plate - for any new vehicle until the real plates arrive, many threads exist on the ins and outs of this particular plate. (Many Thais will extend the time that they drive around on the red plate to give the impression (?) that they still have a 'new' car.)

Yellow background & black letters = Fare paying passenger vehicle. (Baht Bus etc.)

Green background & white letters = Millitary. (I'm a little fuzzy on this one - I think those are the ones I see when I drive down to see a mate of mine near the Navy base just down the road.)

There a few other versions of military plates I've seen in the past.

Hi :o

Green background + white letters is, i think, limousine service. As all those AOT Volvos and Camrys have such plates, also the many hotel limo's and those "London Taxi" ones as well.

And yellow background + black letters can also be found on many trucks, which sure don't transport passengers - must be some form of "commercial transportation" in general, not just "passenger transport".

Best regards....

this link was very helpful (if the info is correct): http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/redirect.php...nse-plates.html

Can someone please clarify... WHITE PLATE - GREEN LETTERS... does this have any restrictions?

Can I buy a vehicle with plates like this? I have seen a jeep wrangler in like with green letter plates.

thanks in advance to any one with the knowledge to reply!...

From the link quoted:"Company registered vehicle license plate: 2 Green letters and 1, 2, 3 or 4 green digits, on a white background." This is not correct.

WHITE PLATE - GREEN LETTERS... does this have any restrictions? - yes must be fitted to a vehicle with two doors.

Nothing to do with company ownership.

Recently I spotted some new dealer plates for motorcycles: Red plate, white letters, numbers.

Saw them in Rayong and Pattaya.

I don't know whether these are only for bikes and whether they will replace the red/black combination.

NEXT QUESTION...

Owning a Vehicle as a Farrang... What are the rules on owning one, how do I go about tax and insurance. I have read some stuff on a few websites but as usual everything is rather 'HAZY!' If any one could clear this up for me (preferably from their own RECENT experience) this would be really helpful.

thanks again :o:):D:):D

Owning a Vehicle as a Farrang... What are the rules on owning one,
Must be resident here; I.E. long term visa or in my case work permit. Need proof of address from immigration, so take your WP or house/condo papers or rental agreement to immigration for that particular form to be issued.
how do I go about tax and insurance.
Tax, look at the back of your blue book for the rates paid over the past few years - it goes down every year with a bigger jump after 7 years I think (My books are at home). So you can check what the rough price will be. If your car is over 7 years old it needs an 'inspection' and emissions test before your tax stamp is issued, few cars will fail. This is carried out at the Land Transport Office where you pay your tax. You will also need to pay the basic insurance cover for third party medical expenses, in Thai called 'parabore' or similar - about 700 Baht I think.

Insurance, sold from many places around Thailand from road side tents to shops and the internet including TV. Comes is a selection of cover levels with options to reduce cover to named drivers or limit coverage on damage to your own car etc.

Best cover is "First Class", next down is "Second Class + 100kB cover on your car, called "2+1" etc.

Insurance is based on the car - not the driver.

First class generally not available on older cars - although there are exceptions to this rule I understand.

I have read some stuff on a few websites but as usual everything is rather 'HAZY!'
Me stuff renewed a few months ago - didn't do it myself, get one of the office girls to run around and present the bill.
