My 18 year old niece (Thai mother/Brit father) wishes to go to Thailand for her Gap year; to work as a teaching assistant. During her stay she would like to obtain Thai nationality. Does anybody know how long this process would normally take? Would it be realistic to enter on a three-month tourist visa or would it preferable to enter on a year-long work visa?

She is Thai. She just needs to get paper work sorted out with the Thai embassy where ever you guys are. She dose not need a visa. it can be done here as well

where was she born?

For all intents and purposes she is already Thai - she just needs to get the documentation to prove it.

In any case, it sounds like she is in the UK. There are two scenario's both which will require her to visit the Thai embassy in London to get the correct paperwork.

1) If she was born in Thailand, then she is already Thai and will have a Thai birth certificate to prove that fact. She needs to take this down (as well as anything else they require) and apply for a biometric Thai passport. Reports on Thai Visa say that the turn around time for passports issued overseas is about 2 to 4 weeks.

2) If she was born in the UK she will need to get a Thai birth certificate. Given she was born in the UK the only Thai government authority which can quickly and easily issue her a Thai birth certificate is the Thai embassy for the United Kingdom, The details are on the website as to what she will need. Although you can apply for the Thai birth certificate by post, it is best she does it at the embassy as she can apply for her Thai passport at the same time.

She'll need the Thai passport to enter Thailand if she doesn't wish to have a limit on her stay (which would happen if she used her Brit passport).

Once again Samran thanks very much for your advice. She was born in Nakhon Sawan and now with this advice she'll be able to get things sorted out in the UK.
