August 8, 2025Aug 8 Popular Post Photo courtesy of Thai PBS In an ongoing effort to strengthen trade ties, Thailand and the United States are set to hold a second round of discussions focused on non-tariff issues like regional value content (RVC). Scheduled for the end of this month or early September, the talks aim to reach an Agreement on Reciprocal Tariffs (ART), according to Deputy Commerce Minister Chantawit Tantasith. The central issue revolves around whether the US will address the RVC with each nation individually or collectively. This decision carries considerable implications for Thai exports, particularly manufactured goods, while largely sparing farm and processed agricultural products, thanks to their utilization of locally-sourced materials. Chantawit emphasised that any finalized ART must be approved by the Thai parliament, ensuring transparency and public participation in the decision-making process. Complicating matters, a new 19% tariff on Thai imports to the US has been implemented as of Thursday. Meanwhile, a heftier 40% tariff on transshipped goods hasn’t yet come into force, pending further regulatory clarification from the US authorities. This leaves many Thai exporters in a state of uncertainty. In contrast, US imports into Thailand enjoy more favourable conditions. More than 10,000 items are already exempt from taxation, with about 60% benefitting from existing free trade agreements with the US and other nations. Even with around 2,000 other products not covered, Minister Chantawit reassured that their impact on the Thai market would be minimal, as they are unlikely to see significant import demand. As the dialogue between these two nations continues, many eyes will be on how these negotiations progress and the potential economic impacts on both sides. These talks mark a crucial moment for enhancing trade relations, with both countries standing to gain from a mutually beneficial agreement. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai PBS 2025-08-08

When corporate income taxes are raised, or when the minimum wage is raised, it drives up prices, but your all for that, yes? Sales taxes are regressive, but you love those, yes? How about gasoline taxes, hideously regressive….

I've hated the CCP for a long time now. I don't necessarily have anything against the Chinese people but I despise their government much the same as with America. However with Trump's incredibly repulsive behavior, his nonstop arrogance, his insistence on American exceptionalism, his extreme levels of ignorance, and the extreme lack of regard with which he treats his closest allies, and the affection that he showers on his on our enemies and on dictators and despots, I am now rooting for China. I am now buying Chinese products once again, and I'm hoping that the world pivots away from America and pivots towards China. I didn't ask for this, but Trump has dramatically facilitated the precipitous decline that America was already experiencing, and regardless of what he does that's not going to stop. The circus goomba is not going to bring back manufacturing to America to any significant degree, anytime soon.

Trump is an authoritarian currently held in check. Xi is a totalitarian with no domestic or international limits on his control, as the scrubbing of the art exhibit demonstrates.

I was about to ask that myself, it's certainly not a very weak and timid Congress nor the very broken and morally bankrupt Senate, and it's certainly not the highly compromised Supreme Court. It most definitely is not the very broken Democratic Party, so could you break it down for us and let us know who you think has Trump in check and what democratic apparatus seems to be holding him back?

One can only hope, so far the courts have shown little Independence, and most of their decisions that have gone against Trump have been won on appeal. Never forget Trump is one of the most litigious people on the planet, and he loves lawyers and keeping them very busy. That's one of the tactics of a bully and a punk autocrat with deep pockets.

I have to tell you, I enjoyed the meltdown by you poor guys. To think you know more about economics , bilateral trades, and tariffs than the collective people in government who are experts in this field compared to a bunch of old ex pats behind a keyboard is among the funniest things I have come across. Please continue with your hate of Trump and your diss of American international policies. I look forward to the next round of nonsense!

Even the Republicans in both houses are preventing Trump from making recess appointments. When has Xi ever been prevented from appointing whomever he wants anywhere in China. There are differences between China and the US, even with Trump in charge. And to prefer what goes on in China over the US is madness, in my view.
August 10, 2025Aug 10 With all this talk about tariffs, I think expats have taken their eye the Baht Rate. Looks like its going back to the 1960's- 1994, 25 baht for 1 dollar, it's just around the corner. I was here in 1966 and 1972 and came to live here in 1991 all the same 25 to 1
