In What Position Do I Put The Pump?

Can someone help me with this question?

Leave it in filter position. Your pool also should have the option to close some of the inlets not used with the vacuum hose. That will give you much stronger suction. I used to put plastic bucket lids over the inlets on the bottom of the pool. I used the dip net to move them over the opening and the suction held then there. When I shut the pump off, they would float back to the top.

Use the filter setting for routine vacuuming but if you use alum or PAC for clarifying then you must use the waste setting because the filter will not capture the precipitate and you will simply recirculate and disperse the muck. Ideally your vacuum port is separate from the normal filtering drain and selected via a valve manifold at the pump to avoid the problem Gary has.

Hi, If its just light dirt that has blown into the pool, vac it in the FILTER position and this dirt will then be cleared out when you backwash.

If for any reason it is really dirty or thick algae you would probably be better putting it to WASTE, bearing in mind that this lowers the pool level

let me know if you get stuck

If a pool system has been designed and constructed correctly according to standard practice, there will be at least TWO valves in the pumphouse.

One will be the arrival from the skimmer/maindrain, the other will be from the vacuum port. To obtain maximum suction when using the vacuum head, you close the valve from the skimmer/maindrain, and open the valve for the vcuum line. When you have finished you revert the valve positions.

Of course, if your pool does not have this facility, then you should be able to claim some money back from the constructor :D - it's like selling a new car without without a braking system :o .
