I guess the topic title says it all.

My old UPS gave up the ghost, maybe being about 7 - 8 years old it was past its best, I bought a new one today and I'm wondering if I need to charge the UPS unit overnight for it to be fully operational.

Cos when the electric went out with my old UPS, we would lose all our scores on the PC game Zuma, and that's really frustrating when going for a record score. :o Then there was a buzzing noise coming from the UPS and it was getting very very hot, so I decided to buy a new one.

Thanks guys. :D

An 8 hour charge is normally recommended before putting it into service. The manual usually says if it came with one. :o

Sorry to seem stupid, but, having only ever used laptops/notebooks and, having just purchased a full-blown desktop comp. for my daughter---should I buy a UPS to go with it??

Many people to this day power-off their laptops/desktops after they are done using them. If you are not one of these people, then for a desktop, a UPS might be nice to have, but not necessary. It will help maintain the system in a running state (thus preserving open documents, games, etc) if the power should be lost at your home.

A UPS needs to be fully charged before using it; this can be done overnight, during the day, or a combination of both. :o

Thanks guys.

I reckon it came with some charge already in it, as my GF was getting a real good score on the game ' ZUMA ' and I turned the power off, but the PC stayed on. :o

Anyway it's all good for now, thanks again. :D

Yes Definitely. With a desktop set up anytime there is a power drop or surge or a total power out you will lose everything that has not been saved. It is also bad for the hard drive not to be shut down properly.

A UPS will give you time to save anything you have been working on also let you log off the internet and park the drive.

And the glow from the screen will also give enough light to find the candles if you have a power out at night.
