Details and graphic on this link.

Should turn the moon a nice deep red color.

....just hope the cloud cover over Pattaya clears later !

Another useful link.

Cool - I will go out and have a look. Couldn't make any sense of your link though :o

If I'm reading the chart correctly that you link to the eclipse will be seen the greatest for Thailand during 22:44 to 23.57 UT on Sat 8/16... In saying that doesn't this represent 05:44 to 06:57 on Sun 8/17 for BKK time?

As I interpret it the maximum eclipse will be at 0410 local, but far from total, so I think the effect will be minimal even with clear skies.

but far from total

yes, this is the last lunar eclipse of 2008 and it's Partial only (from anywhere on Earth)

Who in the he77 said anything about 'total'????

...and if I read the time zone charts correctly BKK time is 7 hours ahead of Universal Time (UT).

This is a joke, right?

Why would anyone be outside watching a lunar eclipse when they could be inside watching their toenails grow?

For those who have not noticed, except during Full Moon, there is a partial lunar eclipse every night!

And durned exciting it is, too! :o

lunar eclipses are caused by shadows of the Earth on Moon, Your nightly lunar phases are not.

sorry to nit pick, but... :D

now, where's my nail cutters :o

No there isn't! What you see every night is how much of the moon is illuminated directly by the sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when the shadow of the earth falls on the moon, a bit rarer.

And instead of watching your toenails, maybe you can try to beat this guym "superlover" :o:D:D

Duh, okay, poorly stated on my part. Should have said something like seeing the moon in something less than her full glory almost every night which is certainly every bit as exciting as it being in shadow.. :o

And a faked pregnancy story which doesn't seem to be true relates to this... how? :D

You have to scroll down to the "Superlover" for the challenge, and also to relieve the boredom of watching your toenails grow.... :D

Like I said in an above post, I don't think anything will start until around 5 am...... but it appears you have a nice clear shot of the moon tonight from your location. :o

Yes, a very nice clear shot of...

a full moon. :D

:D

I've been Googling around and you're right - about 4 to 5 am we should start to see something: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_2008_lunar_eclipse

It'll probably be raining then, though. :o

It's started - about 1/3 gone already.

Couldn't see it from my apartment. Went outside and the two security guards were watching, sat with them for a while and watched. Very nice, almost gone now.

if you take your binoculars, you can see there are a few aliens sitting on the moon with funny sunglasses on, watching the solar eclipse... :o

Cheeky b*gger! :D

Actually, I'll take that as a compliment! :D

It's a Panasonic DMC-TZ3. I had to turn down the exposure to "-2" (whatever that means) i.e. the minimum, in order to stop the moon's surface looking completely white, with no detail.

I also had to change the "Metering mode" i.e. the way the camera decides what to look at to determine the exposure, to a small cross-hair in the middle of the view screen. Then, when I pointed at the moon (at 10x optical, 4x digital zoom) I had to get the cross-hair somewhere on the surface of the moon, otherwise the picture would be too bright again.

As more and more of the surface went into shadow, it became harder and harder to hold the camera still enough to get the exposure cross-hairs on the moon. Also, the auto focus started to fail as the moon became thinner - just not enough for the system to focus on, I guess.

Maybe I'll get a proper camera for the next eclipse. :D
