I have finally settled in to my 1st permanent room in CM and now I want to get some low end (100 to 700 baht) speakers to listen to my classical and jazz music stored on my PC. I have headphones but want to enjoy my music free of cable. I realize that at these prices, it wont be the quality of Bose or others, so can I buy something decent? I wonder if there is a noticeable difference between speakers costing 150baht versus 700baht?

Thanks

Look in the (creative) range I bought some for around 900 and they keep the nabuors awake! 150 baht? You better buy those 2 week lasting headphones.

can the posters share which they purchased for either the 900 or 1000 baht?

were they 2.1 or more speakers?

yes for that price it will 2.1 3 peace 2 speakers and a Sub!

Am using Eacan make, very good at 1100 Baht , same spec as above and very good accoustics, and also very Loud, its worth the extra,as always you get what you pay for.

Logitech R20

About 1000 baht. They're not bad for the price so I have them in an area where a good set of speakers isn't essential and would get trashed anyway. You can find them at Hardware House shops.

If I was choosing a set of speakers for jazz and classical and it was to be my only set then I would up the budget to at least 2000 baht. I know you can't always go by price but when I compare the R20's to my more expensive speakers the difference is clear. Go to somewhere like IT City where they have a decent range at different prices and where they usually have some set up so you can hear them, then decide. Creative, Altec Lansing and Logitech are some brands where you should find something decent.

Yes - you've got to listen to them. I help lots of my friends purchase equipment - and have made mistakes, by not listening to speakers. I used to have a lot of respect for Creative speakers, and I have a great little set of foldaway speakers (about 45 pounds in England) that have tremendous power and clarity for their size. However, having encouraged a friend to spend 600 Baht on a pair of Creative desktop speakers, instead of going for the ultra cheapies, I was shocked at how truly horrible they were. I mean , you don't expect much for 600 Baht, but they sounded like the 150 Baht cheapies - yuck!

I spent about 1800 Baht on a set of Creative Inspire M2600's for myself last year. I listened to them in the shop - but i hadn't taken my own range of music to play, and thought they were okay. they are NOT - they are rubbish! Okay for gamers: lots of base, lots of volume - but if you listen to music at low volumes they sound horrible: all power and no finesse... The lesson then: take you're own player with a range of different music genres, and listen at different volume levels.

I now have a set of Alting Lansing ATP3 speakers, and I love them - super clatity, and plenty of power too. great to listen to through a range of different volumes. I got them second-hand for 1,500 Baht, new they are around 3,500 Baht but worth every penny imho.

If you are looking to spend less, then my recommendation would be Phillips speakers, if you can find them! I've bought these for several of my friends and they all rave about how good they are (me included). Two years ago the IT chops in Chiang Mai all had them in big stacks and were selling them for less then 1,000 Baht. Over time there seemed to be less about, and the price crept up to more like 1400 Baht. they have, however, got a similar quality of sound to my Altec Lansings and are a great buy if you can find them. The only reason I don't have a set myself is that I lent them to a friend at a time when I wasn't using my PC to listen to music, and he had them that long that he eventully gave me the money instead of giving me them back. When I went looking for a new set in CM I couldn't find any and bought the Creatives - bo**ox, big mistake! I don't know the model number of the Phillips speakers, as I no longer have them. Doh! They are two small pods and a subwoofer, with the speaker volume control on a lead connected to one of the speakers.

The moral of this story - don't lend your speakers to friends, it'll cost you a fortune!! And NO, you can't borrow my Altec Lansings - buy your own! I'll sell you the Creatives though, lol. :o

I moved in to an apartment building with single rooms and I probably wont be able to play my music very high, so good clarity using low to mid volume is what I would want.

Gee, not even for an hour? I'll return them right after ....................................................................... a day, well, a month, well a year, here's 500 baht after all, they're used. :D

Thanks for taking the time to explain the differences. That's what I was looking for.

What is the deal for returning equipment? I have had only 1 experience several months ago when I bought these cheap mic/headphones. I made the mistake of not opening the package while I was in the shop but a minute after I left so I didn't notice that the cables were rather thin. The package could easily be opened without damaging the wrapping. I went right back 2 minutes later and said I wanted to return them. Since I didn't find what I wanted, I wanted my money back but they refused and said I could exchange it for a different headphone. We went back and forth until I gave-up and got another pair that was good enough. The headphones I was returning were only 90 baht and they gave me a hard time. I don't want to spend 1000 to 3000 baht, come home and find that in the quiet of my room, they are not what I expected even after listening to them in a noisy store. Any advice?

You get what you pay for generally.

I have some Philips Speaker system that cost less than 2000 Baht, can't remember the exact price, but they're pretty good.

I also have the Creative Labs I-Trigue 3400 2.1 Speaker System, they cost around the 3500 Baht range, they're very good.

Ok, I have the model for the Philips speakers :

Philips Audio PC 400.

And the price was 1,990 Baht, though I'm sure I spotted them recently somewhere at around 1200 Baht I bought mine quite a while back so I paid a higher price.

If you can get the speaker system for 1200 baht you will be well pleased.

They're 2 Pods and a subwoofer, Black and Silver, good sound.

Check out some of the products from microlab. Blows the doors off most Creative stuff. Some models look like Bose knock offs. Only place I know for sure sells them is in Fortune.

The best value speakers of any type I have experienced are the Saag 10R 2.1 I just bought a set for 800thb. They are staggeringly good for the money and made in Thailand, I have owned three sets Ok the first set didn't work out of the box but <deleted> TiT! I used to sell E.V (Electro-Voice), proper Altec Lansing, and Gauss loudspeakers, for the UK distributor so I have some idea about speakers.
